Control is the operative term I always use. Self-control. Control of others (and ability to influence others). Control of your situation.
I think it also depends - at least a bit - on the situation you're in. Stick a Green Beret who is in the middle of his pecking order on his Team into a pack of school teachers or IT consultants, and he instantly becomes the alpha.
You're right, though - you know it when you see it.
