Why I chose to get a second degree. And also why I laugh when people question that it was nursing.

Serious question, how old were you when you decided to get that second degree? I'm really considering going back to college myself and going down this career path.

ETA: I'd be enthralled with 65k after graduation. Although i'm not sure my school is top 50 even

I went back at 34 after 10 years to get my MBA. It was much easier after 10 years of growing up, even with 3 kids.

This is most certainly not the norm. Most software jobs are asking for 5 years of experience and team lead positions before approaching 100k.

yeah, and if you really want to make money in tech, software dev is not where its at.

Our junior product marketing and product managers clear $120k. Senior people make closer to 200k. hell a good program manager will make more than most developers.

I would have thought Economics, MIS or Finance would have been up there too. Senior portfolio managers at my friend's firm make $250k. He is one and is only 33

My older brother is a software developer and makes over 100k without a masters degree. He has a plethora of certifications and a general studies degree but no masters.

A guy I know that lurks on here makes $125k. He is a professor of Econ and has his Phd or course, but he says including his office hours he works about 15-20 hours a week. His wife is dermatologist. Dude has it made.

There are plenty of dev guys making over 100k. I have hired many. That doesn't mean they start at that. 60-80k is more realistic starting out

I'm 34 and have two kids. I've been seriously thinking about going back to school. Tired of being a broke PR Journalist.

Do you need a Masters degree in those fields?

Definitely not in EE. Over my 3 years at UNO, I never saw an American grad student. It was all Indians, Asians, and Middle Easterners. Not sure of the reason. If I had to guess, they probably had to if they wanted to stay in the country.
