re: The Cable Industry Believes Cord Cutting Will End Once Millennials Have Families

I actually agree with the statement .
I'd venture to guess that almost everybody in this thread saying "adapt or die" doesn't have kids.
I don't fee like I'm getting fleeced by the cable companies. I watch and use more data and cable television than just about any other form of entertainment and it only costs me $130/month.
You also get to an age where it's not okay to mooch off others who are paying for the things you want, and most cord cutters are doing just that.

Older generations are just mad that they've been utter failures at everything. They refuse to adapt

This in itself is a problem. People fail to realize how much of your time cable steals from you. People are content sitting in front of some mindless bullshite for hours.
Since I've cut cable I rarely spend much time in front of the TV. When I want to watch something, boom I watch it with no interruptions.
This is an aspect that is never taken into consideration when cord cutting.

simple question for all of you who feel so strongly about cable/netflix/streaming/satellite,etc:
why do you (seemingly) labor so over this issue?
In the end, this is no different than any other purchase- either you can afford it or not, its a good deal or not. This subject and the accompanying hostility towards the cable companies is a weekly topic around here. What makes this any different from any other money issue you face?
i'm not finding fault, just trying to understand why this subject gets people riled up.

100% Cord Free.
Comcast bill is $50 + $25 for Sling.
Don't mooch off of anyone and have more TV series / movies available to me than you and anyone you know with standard cable combined. Instantly, without commercials, and for free. It's called TVMC....do some homework some time instead of making bold statements on the Internet regarding things you know little to nothing about

Because cable companies basically own the market. Little to no competition. They refuse to adapt to what their customers want, which is a la carte cable.

I think the point of the article is that millennials may have trouble getting chicks if they are cord cutters.

I don't feel strongly about it one way or another. We don't watch TV that much so I can't justify spending $150 a month on cable.
There's probably lots of things I spend money on that other people couldn't justify

Do you even netflix and chill, chicken?

About to do it myself, though might wait for end of football season.
I live alone and away from the house a good bit, I am only home maybe 2-3 night a week. $125 a month just to have HD is nuts. This is on top of the $60 a month internet charge.
Its not that I can't afford it, its that I am an idiot for paying that much for something I do not often use.

quote:It annoys me that it costs so much when I used so little when I had satellite. That's my main problem with it all. But I found a way to get way more content than I had before at a fraction of the cost. Not only that but I added quality content with HBO Now and the Netflix originals.

you're certainly not alone in that.

This in itself is a problem
I get up in the morning, dress and play with my kids, and send them off to daycare. I go to work, then the gym, make dinner or play with the kids then sit on my arse for a couple hours at the end of the night and watch DVR or sports. Boom - no interruptions.
On Saturday/Sunday the TV is on football at least 6 hours and usually more if only in the background. I might do some work on the laptop, might stream some music on the patio, or watch a movie on HBO go or Netflix that I pay for. My kids might watch cartoons in the morning or when they aren't feeling well and I like the ease of it. Maybe I'm lazy.
A lot of people trash $130/month on stupid stuff. Cable/internet doesn't seem to be a stupid bill for me. It gets used.

Completely backwards, you have this.

Seriously? Go read the cord cutter thread. If you think you're in the majority of cable cutters who aren't mooching off of someone, you should go do some homework.

Damn boomer parents wouldn't let me invite one of my Tinder matches over to Netflix and chill because they wanted to watch Fox News . I mean, I'm like 28, come on, treat me like an adult. John Oliver did a great segment on this phenomenon.

I haven't had cable since living on my own. Currently, I'm blowing $55/month on internet when my apartment has basically been a glorified storage unit for the past few months. Like you said, it isn't that $55/month is some mass expense, but my apartment is just sitting there with protected internet that no one is using.
I plan to cancel it as soon as I know 100% that I'm moving out next month.

Ocean, I generally don't have time for TV
Posted on 10/20/15 at 9:51 am to LSUAfro
I cut the cord in 2009. I can't imagine every getting cable again. I watch probably 6-8 ESPN games a year, for which I mooch off a friend. I do pay him for his ESPNgo acct. But I do mooch.
I also steal movies / tv shows via torrenting. But I did that when I had cable. I have several streaming services and I torrent stuff I can get on there just cause its easier and no buffering.
eta: We probably watch 1 football game a week, and maybe one movie. And a few shows - americans, walking dead, GoT. Likely will try Fargo.
