They're gonna be disappointed.

Check out how many millennials you see walking down the highway.

Increasingly, millennials don't have a pot to piss in nor a window to throw it out of.
This is the truth. I see studies showing how public transit or various living situations and hipster style clothing is becoming more popular.
It's not because it's now cool to wear cheap clothes, skip buying a car, or delay buying a house in a nice area....it's because a lot of millennials are basically broke while getting completely raped on student loans and a weak economy. It's kind of sad.
Them eventually settling down and having children only means they'll vastly expand the market for streamed online content. Sorry cable providers....if you didn't have the monopoly on internet service in so many areas, you'd be dead already.

Cord cutting will end when millennials' parents die off and they can't use their passwords anymore.

I'm a Millennial, and I find this funny.
That industry is just ripe for destruction and disruption. The first major player to offer high speed broadband and not charge a premium will be a devastating winner.
Honestly, ESPN and the Mouse are what is keeping immense numbers of people hooked on this crap (including me). If they shake away or lose their live sports contracts, they are fricked.

You guys do realize that as people move from cable to Internet supplied content that the cost of the Internet content will increase right? At the end of the day you will be paying roughly the same dollars but for only the channels you want instead of those plus a bunch you don't want.
You'll get less for same price. See how Netflix keeps increasing its streaming price plus you have to pay for Internet access. Add in HBOGO and one or two others and you are easily at $80 per month.

They're always scrambling to watch sports, mooching off someone's HBO Go, etc.
The true hallmark of the millennial: they think they are being innovative and resourceful. Nope just old fashioned mooching and stealing. Getting something someone else pays for.

You're trying to envision the current model of television evolved into an internet model. It won't be that way. It'll be completely shaken up. Future generations won't know what a "channel" even fricking is.

I didn't see you including the cost of electricity in the cost of cable, so why are you including the cost of internet in the cost of streaming services? It wasn't like I wasn't gonna have internet anyway...

Yeah no. Sports and HBO are available on SlingTV. When I cut the cord I had my parents' password but I specifically set out to not have to use it, and it's worked out very well so far. I use a TiVo DVR to record all network television OTA using an antenna and I use SlingTV on the Roku for the rest, with Netflix for additional content. Never once have had to use my parents' password, not once.

Good for you. But hey you got it right there in case the urge to mooch hits you.

Point is that it's still economical to cut the cord without someone else's password. When mooching is no longer an option (parents kick the bucket, etc.) kids aren't going to flock to a cable subscription.

Uh, you're going to be paying for Internet either way. Netflix is only increased for new subscribers and it's still a few dollars
You can get ATT uverse with a year of Amazon prime and hbogo for $50/month
If you really miss it, add hulu plus and you basically have everything you need

If I didn't have a family I'd probably get cable because I'd have more time to watch tv.
Posted on 10/20/15 at 6:18 am to Bench McElroy
That article is so millennial. "Sipping bourbon" reeks of the jealous class warfare that characterizes this generation. You don't think they realize they are going to have to adapt to fundamental changes to their industry? Of course they are going to have their finger on the pulse of what consumers are doing, many are right in the thick of it since they provide both tv and Internet services. They are going to tell investors and analysts what they want them to hear and work to adapt.

The electrical cost of a tv is minuscule. The Internet cost associated with a streaming only tv package is very high. Look at the data caps being put in place. A $50/ month Internet package does not have enough data for you computer, mobile devices, and streaming all your video entertainment.

They are the first generation in American history to digress, wealth-wise, from the previous generation.
Look for this to continue as America's march toward totalitarian socialism continues.
Most of them are still in college and you're already trying to shove the blame for the economy on them?

No - 50 of you will kick in .20 and buy one password and break the law.
