My Honda Accord has Adaptive Cruise Control, which is probably similar, if not the same. (I'm not researching to see if Tesla's TACC is Honda's ACC.) My car would have hit the van. The radar is on the passenger side and would have still been registering the car that stayed in the lane while going around the van. It's not an autopilot of any sort, it just adjusts your cruise control based on the car in front. Example: My cruise is set at 75mph and car in front is doing 74mph. My car will match the speed at 74mph and keep my preselected distance.
The feature is amazing on long drives because you set it at your max speed and you don't have to play up and down on the gas trying to match speeds. You still have to look ahead to see if traffic is screeching to a stop two cars in front. This is easily drivers fault.
