At least 84 people were killed and 20 others were seriously injured Thursday when a terrorist drove a large truck loaded with guns and hand grenades into a crowd that had gathered for a Bastille Day fireworks display in the southern French city of Nice.

2 Americans included in death toll. Dad and young son from Texas. 10 kids among 84 dead.

Driver of truck confirmed dead but identity not yet released. French officials released a statement saying the driver was "known to police for violence and use of weapons but no facts related to terrorism. He was 30 years old, born in 1985. It is known that he rented the truck that was used in the attack."

Government agencies treating attack as terrorism until evidence proves otherwise.

UPDATE: Driver identified as Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhle, 31.

The monster behind the wheel of a box truck that plowed into Bastille Day revelers in Nice late Thursday - killing at least 84 - was a creepy Tunisian loner sometimes prone to violence, but not seen by police or neighbors as a religious fanatic, according to French reports.

Neighbors told BFM Bouhlel was not overtly religious, but had been depressed – and even aggressive - over his divorce and financial problems. "He (didn't) pray and liked girls and Salsa," BFM's crime correspondent reported. A neighbor the channel identified as Jasmine said Bouhlel was "rude and a bit weird” and had his hair cut like the famous actor. "He kept to himself but would always rant about his wife,” she said. “He had marital problems and would tell people in the local cafe. He scared my children though." Other neighbors told the channel Bouhlel was handsome, but creepy. He had a police record that included assault with a weapon, domestic violence, threats and robbery but had no previous convictions for terrorism, the Telegraph reported.

France’s national holiday turned ugly for revelers Thursday night in the southern city of Nice, as a truck reportedly crashed into a crowd of Bastille Day revelers, killing dozens of people.

The mayor of Nice tweeted that dozens of people were killed.

There also were reports of gunshots, though fireworks are often set off on Bastille Day, making such early witness accounts questionable.

Islamist terror groups, sometimes using native-French Muslims, have targeted France repeatedly in recent years and the use of vehicles and car bombs are among their

I'd bet anything the terrorist was on some sort of watchlist for observation that the authorities sat on for months.

"The refugees are poor, defenseless women and children. Have a heart you bigot."

Left sentiment about 6 months ago.
