There is a difference between Reman and Rebuilt.

Reman is where the housing/case is reused however everything inside is new.
I'm sure on the "rebuilt units" they use cheap parts where as Reman units typically have all new and updated components.

Rebuilt is where only the broken items (clutches/drum/band) are replaced and the parts that are "ok" are not replaced.

You would like to think that but no. For one, all the torque converters in remains are rebuilt. Two, none of the solenoids are new and three all reman companies get their hard parts via cores aka used transmissions.

How common/uncommon is it to have a standard rebuilt? I've known a few people who had to replace the clutch but no one who ever had to have extensive work done on a manual.

More and more uncommon. I'm actually doing a Subaru right now and it's the first one we've ever had. I say we average one standard a year but we do about 6-8 clutches a year.

Yep. I'd buy a new, used car at that price point. That's roughly half of what I paid for this one used @108K

Maybe you missed the "new, used" disclaimer above. Though I guess you could wind up with that kind of note of a very lightly used Escalade or Navigator or the like. I'm all about calculated risks, though. If it happens in the next 40,000 miles, I would consider it. After that, it would earn a swift trade in. The car would barely be worth what the transmission would cost at that point.

It's not about what the cars worth, it's about what it's worth to you.

Used car 15k
325 a month for 52 months
In 12 months that's 3900.00
