charter schools are very unstable here in BR.

Madison Prep is the only one (to my knowledge) thats doing fine.

I live in st. Jude parish. Both of my daughters went to school there. It's a good school but if I were you I would move to prairiville and enroll your child in one of the good public schools. Save the tuition money to put into your house or college for your child. A Catholic education is good but a quality public school education is just as good. You can teach her religion at home.

I agree that catholic schools will nickel and dime you but so do all private schools. It's part of it.

St jean vianney was our favorite school academicly. They had speacial reading help for my son that st alphonsus did not have. People and principle were great. But the teachers are under paid and it is a revolving door. Some teachers are great and some are the devil. Its a crap shoot. Good luck

St Jude and it's really not close. It's a great school, competes athletically and academically with St A and St G, but has less than half of the students.

But, honestly, in the end they'll all offer a great experience. You can't go wrong with any of them.

No...youre just trying to justify paying private school. My kids in public school getting college credit in ap classes as a freshman.

They are basically a privately funded public school
Supposed to have to take a test to get in, but you can get in no matter what if you come from a poor background

$16k for three kids is a bargain.

Maybe...but I'd seriously try to get them into the BR Magnet school, which is a very good program.

Not sure about what Lee Magnet is doing, but here's an article on it:
quote:

LINK

Like Baton Rouge Magnet, Lee High is now a magnet school with selective admission requirements. The two schools also share the same principal, Nan McCann.

The impact of the new Lee High could be especially pronounced at McKinley High, and to a lesser extent at Woodlawn High:

-- McKinley and Woodlawn have prominent gifted programs, but combined, those tracks educate only about 400 students. That’s a third of the size of the new Lee, which will have a total capacity of about 1,200 students and has the property to grow larger still.

-- McKinley and Woodlawn currently enroll 300 and 100 students, respectively, who live in the Lee attendance zone. Students who live in that zone, now dubbed a priority zone, get top preference for admittance to Lee, as long as they have high enough grades and do well enough on a standardized test.

quote:

Lee High is not the only college prep competitor on the horizon. Arizona-based BASIS Schools has announced plans to launch as many as five schools in Louisiana, including one in Baton Rouge in 2017 or 2018. The for-profit charter school network, which was recruited to Louisiana by the nonprofit group New Schools for Baton Rouge, is planning to apply for a charter from the state this spring.

$16K may be a bargain for three kids in a good performing private school, but for what the average income is in south Baton Rouge....it's really steep for a lot of families.

To the OP: St. Jude is a fine school.

My understanding is that AP classes QUALIFY them to take tests to obtain college credit. We don't have AP courses so I may not understand it right.

Our school here DOES offer Dual enrollment math and English through ULL; my son will graduate high school with 15 college credit hours. He graduates highs school in May but should be a sophomore after the fall semester.

Okay. Seriously
I put 5 children through catholic school until i ran out of money then went public. Here is the bottom line honest truth. If you are catholic and want your kids to be catholic then you should send them to cath school.
My youngest went public after 4th grade and he is ignorant of the faith( my fault i know)
If its just about the education then not any better than public IMO

really...WOW! I'll have to mention that to Catholic High. They'll be fascinated to know that is available. Wait, my bad, my son just wrapped up an honors class at Catholic that offers College credit. Maybe they do know after all.

But that has nothing to do with your claim that St Jude's teachers aren't certified. See, thing is, I bet only one of us has spent time on the board for that school and knows exactly what is required of new hires. This doesn't even get into the "Catholic" portion of the Catholic Education.

But good luck with that public school thing. It works great for some kids. But don't throw out bullshite as facts about something you know nothing about.

I have one in Pre-K there now and another in 1st grade. They both really enjoy it and we have been able to get to know the other kids' parents as well.

I like the fact that it is a small school. My oldest went to MBS and we find St. Jude very similar.

Seems like that would depend on both the quality of the Catholic school in question and the quality of the public school district.

Some public school districts in Louisiana are so bad that even mediocre private schools are the only real option.

Definitely see it adding up already with all the miscellanous fees even prior to tuition payments. We will also have to pay pre and after hour care

Overall, we are very glad that she was accepted and not have to scramble for alternatives.

Wtf are you talking about...I understand Catholic has ap courses...my point is youre paying $8k per yr for them...and Im not...that money is going into a savings acct in his name for use when he graduates...since youre so smart you understand ROI right? Chances are good your kid and my kid will both end up at an SEC school preferably LSU...but I wont have wasted $50k on the guilt driven Catholic School mentality. Ya dude...sorry youre balls deep in that shite.
