Great city. Lived here for many years now. The growth is ongoing and that will present some major issues in certain areas. As stated previously, Williamson Cty is where a lot of young family types gravitate. It is getting pricey. Not sure what your prospective home budget is right now, but check out Nolensville. It's a great location and has been booming lately. Still some great opportunities though. It's in Williamson Cty and will have 3 new schools next year. Plenty of back roads to the Cool Springs / Franklin / Brentwood area where a lot of the jobs are. Drive into Nashville could be a bit of a bitch depending on time of day though. Wife & a kid here and that's where we are building. Plenty of stuff to do in this area. E-mail me if you have any specific questions. Lived here since '98 and before that was in nearby Clarksville. you do realize williamson county is more than just pockets of 'super subdivisions' right?

no no and no. i would never be able to handle the traffic. i like being able to sneak home on my lunch break and hendersonville doesn't support that if you work in downtown nashville.

Well anc is way off. Williamson County was surveyed to be one of the most affluent and well educated counties in America. It was right behind Huntsville, Al. There is some fake money sure, but most of it is real

As a former resident of Nashville in my 20s before kids, I agree with this. If you are looking at the suburbs, you basically have three choices. Franklin/Williamson County - What the brochures and realtors will tell you: the quintessential happy family area. Great schools, beautiful neighborhoods. What anc will tell you: If you want to be surrounded by debt millionaires and play the keep up with the Joneses' game, Williamson County is for you.

If this were true we wouldn't have the lowest short sale/foreclosure per county in TN. You sound a little bitter/mad poor.

Love Mt Juliet Providence area, but it's trac builder after trac builder and 40 to and from city work commute is brutal

Hendersonville is a nightmare

Jackson and Charleston are both smaller than Knoxville.

Again, I'm referring to major cities.

What is living in Nashville like?

It's great. I'm 27 and engaged for reference. Live downtown.

Traffic definitely sucks

Williamson co has the best schools in the state and top 10 in the country iirc

Housing has gotten expensive. Gentrification is occurring so I suggest doing your due diligence on the next area/s within Nashville to buy as low as possible in hopes of making a good investment. Donelson comes to mind as well as Woodbine.

Lots of family things to do. It's a city

COL has risen but still decent for what you get IMO. But Nashville is experiencing major growth so COL will obviously continue to rise.

You'd hate the traffic I guess? You'd love the security. It's much safer. Music scene is great, and it's not just country like folks think. New amphitheater is being built and is already booked with a ton of great shows. Preds frickin crush, so that's cool these days.

Lots of great info in this thread. Thanks.

This is on a slow burn for us - probably wouldn't happen until late 2015 - early 2016.

How are the winters?

It's a great small-mid sized city. I think it's actually in a contest as I type this for one of the best cities of its size in America.

Charleston has a very rough and large ghetto.

That's N. Charleston.

Nashville's alright. Every time I visit, it has changed. Something new is being built, etc. That's a good thing (new music ampitheater and baseball stadium downtown) and a bad thing (areas like The Gulch). I feel like the city will eventually lose its identity and become just another big, cookie cutter city like Charlotte, Atlanta, Dallas, etc.

The traffic is pretty miserable at times. The city is very spread out. You don't have many "strips" of entertainment and nightlife ( like King St, Magazine St, etc). You have to get in your car and drive to Midtown, then drive to Edgefield, then drive to 12 South. Basically, the city isn't very walkable.

The city isn't short of entertainment options. For sports, you've got a minor league baseball team, a NHL team, a NFL team, and a SEC university. You'll also get any concert available.

I haven't done any outdoor activities when I visited (mainly for parties, weddings, football games). I really couldn't direct you to where they are.

Cold winters, but manageable. Similar to other cities in the South, a winter storm shuts down the city and cleans out the stores. We tend to get one every couple of years. Best to stay home since it's less snow and more ice. Middle Tenn is full of hills so driving is not advisable.

Last winter was especially terrible, but I wouldn't say all winters are "fine." They suck. It's much, MUCH colder here. They suck.

BUT - having 4 real seasons is amazing. I never realized how great Fall and Spring really could be. Summer is not that bad here either. Locals here complain about 90 degrees and say they have humidity. Yeah. Right.

The overall all weather makes the winter bearable, but it still is not a fun 3 months.

Not a clue. We're DINKs.

More expensive than it should be, but not bad.

If you're in to the outdoors, there's so much more to do outside here than in S. LA.

Cost of living?

Average. I moved from Nola to Nashville and kept the same level of income and have seen no decline or increase in my back account on account cost of living.

Coming from the Greater New Orleans area - what would we hate? What would we love?

You'll hate the lack of the "don't give a frick" attitude of New Orleans. You'll also love the lack of the "don't give a frick" attitude.

I live in Melrose and love it. I grew up in Crieve Hall and went to school in Franklin. Williamson County is a little too boring for me, but others love it. I like being a 7 minute drive from work and within walking distance of food and bars.

LOL

You have multiple "strips of entertainment". We could stay in Midtown/Demobreun and bar hop all night or stay downtown and bar hop all night. Both areas have at least a dozen bars. 12 South is also great to walk around in.

ETA:

Downtown in general is very walker friendly. Tons of hotels, bridges, bars, restaurants, event space, arenas, concert venues, etc. You can even walk across the pedestrian bridge to Titans games.

This comment is pretty absurd.

Also, The Gulch is really nice now. Tons of high end condos and restaurants and shopping now.

aside from station inn that entire area used to be a hellhole. its so much better now and the new pedestrian/bike bridge that swoops up and connects out of the gulch to cummins station is going to be a thing of beauty.

LSU comes to town all the time..football, basketball & baseball and tickets are ridiculously easy to get.

you aint lived until you leave 30 minutes prior to the lsu/vandy football kickoff..park on the street 2 blocks from the stadium and walk to the box office and buy 2 tickets and still make kickoff.

What? The various "strips" was one of the things that stood out to me about Nashville.
