East Tennessee is very white. Nashville is a good mix IMO. If your comparing it with New Orleans then yes, it's more white. But which cities through out the country outside of Memphis and Detroit match New Orleans? Not many.

30% of Nashville is black with a little over 10% of the city being hispanic. It's a good melting pot IMO.

Nashville has some pockets of bad neighborhoods, mainly around the HBCUs. That's just a fact.

To the OP, avoid living anywhere that requires a daily commute on I24. Bad traffic.

I'd put Chattanooga over Nashville. Smaller, and prettier scenery.

Chattanooga is a poor mans Asheville. Great day trip, awful place to live when you need city amenities. Schools are awful.

Paul, you're higher than giraffe pussy. Chattanooga is a great small city, but it doesn't come close to what Nashville brings to the table in terms of anything.

I'd definitely put it with Asheville, Greeneville, Wilmington, etc. though

What is living in Nashville like?

its awesome and amazing.

Traffic?

live southwest (west meade, bellevue, fairview) and its fine. 19 minutes to downtown from affordable scenic bellevue

quote:

Housing?

hot right now but you can buy a nice house for around $250k if you shop around.

quote:

Family things to do?

billions. we have everything here.

quote:

Cost of living?

cheap cheap cheap. williamson county (best schools in the state!) property tax is like $3000/year for a $400,000 house. not too shabby.

quote:

Coming from the Greater New Orleans area - what would we hate?

nothing. you will love it here.

beautiful part of the world and we have waterfalls, caves and the corvette museum right up the road.

Uhhh Atlanta, Baton Rouge, Jackson MS, Birmingham, Charleston, etc. are all much more black. If you look at Nashville and surrounding areas like Franklin, Bellevue, Brentwood, etc. its much less diverse than other Southeastern cities.

Not saying its a good or bad thing, just trying to give him a feel for the city.

Job market is pretty fantastic as well. Tons of young people from all over are moving here. Very vibrant right now.

Nashville lost its aura and mid-sized city appeal years ago. It's way too commercialized now.

However, I will say that Franklin, just south of Nashville

same thing. when it takes 18 minutes to get from franklin to the heart of downtown nashville you might as well call it the same city.

Schools, proximity, and property taxes make Williamson a better choice. Fairview is far, hwy 100 is about to suck with Stephens Valley. I'd hit the pocket hoods in the Grassland/Walnut Grove if city access is important

If you live 30 miles South or East of Nashville and commute in everyday, it could be brutal. 24 to Chattanooga is a bottle neck and 65 South to Brentwood/Franklin isn't much better.

i've lived here since 1996 and have never had a problem with my commute except during snows.

course i've always driven in on 40 or hillsboro road.

frick 24, 40 east and 65 north.

I was referring to major cities. But you're right, some areas are a lot whiter than others. You could lump in ATL with Memphis and Detroit. Charleston, Baton Rouge, Birmingham, and Jackson not so much.

Meh, I may be ignorant but in my opinion, Nashville is an awesome place to go to college, or be a young professional, but not live when you're in your 30s with a kid.

As a former resident of Nashville in my 20s before kids, I agree with this.

If you are looking at the suburbs, you basically have three choices.

Franklin/Williamson County -
What the brochures and realtors will tell you: the quintessential happy family area. Great schools, beautiful neighborhoods.

What anc will tell you: If you want to be surrounded by debt millionaires and play the keep up with the Joneses' game, Williamson County is for you.

Mount Juliet
What the brochures and realtors will tell you: Nice little area east of Nashville, not as convenient as Franklin. Pretty good schools.

What anc will tell you: Very underrated. Not as fake as Williamson County, some nice neighborhoods in the Providence area.

Sumner County/Hendersonville
What the brochures and realtors will tell you: Hot area, growing. Home prices are a bargain. Good schools.

What anc will tell you: Be careful. Some parts of Hendersonville (Station Camp HS zone) are great, others are white trash mecca (Hendersonville HS zone)

Jackson is 95% black.

Baton Rouge has horrid crime. Charleston has a very rough and large ghetto.
