A teenage boy in North Carolina has been prosecuted for having nude pictures of himself on his own mobile phone. The young man, who is now 17 but was 16 at the time the photos were discovered, had to strike a plea deal to avoid potentially going to jail and being registered as a sex offender.

Experts condemned the case as ludicrous. The boy was, however, punished by the courts, and had to agree to be subject to warrantless searches by law enforcement for a year, in addition to other penalties.

The young man was also named in the media and suffered a suspension as quarterback of his high school football team while the case was being resolved.

Cormega Copening, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was prosecuted as an adult under federal child pornography felony laws, for sexually exploiting a minor. The minor was himself.

Why would he have to register as a sex offender for his own pictures of himself? This sounds dumb, or we arent getting the whole story

Disgusting. The prosecutor on that case should be ashamed of himself. This is the kind of garbage you get when wins vs. losses are used instead of "did you actually do your job".

I wonder how much of the state's money was spent trying this case?

That should have either been sent to juvie or thrown out of court altogether.

If he's an adult, that makes the pictures legal.

They will profit with his conviction. He has to pay fees, fines and will probably do community services (free labor).

Wow, well thank goodness they didn't find kleenex and hand cream next to his bed or he could have been charged with molesting himself.

Good case to go to court and argue jury nullification.

sounds more like a crooked DA who knows people w/o big $$$ are straight fricked in the courts and used to system to notch one more win and steal some money for the municipality.

shithead will either eventually run for political office on keeping sex offenders off the streets or become a highly paid exec in the for profit prison industry.
