I think a lot of people are putting the cart before the horse here. I think a lot of the weird home school kids you are are not weird BECAUSE they are home schooled. They are home schooled because they are weird.

nothing wrong with Homeschooling. Millions of kids every year are home schooled from the hollywood elite to those with medical handicaps.
A lot depends on his abilities and self discipline.
HOw old is he?
and PS to all the naysayers- our kids were home schooled.
graduated LSU with honors
ONe owns his own businees
another has PHD
One with Masters
One is a fast rising manager in one of the largest corporations operation in LA
It is not for everyone but done correctly it can be superior to private or public education

Have you tried going on social media or reaching out to the local news or crowdfunding?
I'm sure there are plenty of people who would be willing to help tutor knowing your situation or even other home schoolers who could provide guidance.
I'd seriously consider gofundme.com if the situation is that serious. People would probably be more than willing to help you out and make sure that the child gets everything he needs in the home schooling environment.
I'm surprised the school he was in didn't help you with the transition at all when you found out he was sick and had to pull him.

How do you people have enough money to homeschool your kids?
Do you just not work, while the other spouse does?
Do you hire a baby sitter?

Make sure any program that you follow is nationally accredited, because if it isn't, your child will be screwed when it comes time to apply for college.

The reason I ask this is that another anecdotal observation I have is that most, if not all, of the parents who homeschool their children, have a spouse stay home...which means somebody is making a ton of money.
ETA: And I don't know how families are now, but most families I know have both spouses that work

My wife home schools my brood, but we save a lot of money on clothes, gas, etc because we are trying to make them weird by never letting them leave home.

Have you ever seen Trailer Park Boys? There's a lot of life to be lived in a mobile home.
But yeah $50k would be tough.

I know people who do with probably not much more than that. They adjust their lifestyle. We have not had to do that so much, but likely would to keep things as they are.
You may be surprised by how many women (or men) stay home while the spouse works. My daughter goes to a private kindergarten and almost none of the moms work.

I'm hassling ya'll because it's interesting, but there is no denying that the number of kids in homeschool correlates very highly with money.

No hassle. Seriously, I have found the opposite to be true in many many cases. Sure, there are some with $$. We are middle of the road. There are people doing a lot with a little. Priorities differ.

see this is how home schooling originally started...but needless to say although you may not have physically money, the assets of having productive land is definitely making easy to have more money (or like you said live simpler).

Yeah I was always curious about this because you see when I was growing up both my parents worked...combined income maybe around $60,000.
There is no way and hell that we could survive only on one person's income...
I guess I just find it hard to fathom how much money is lost by the other spouse not working
