Some things should not be generic; sunglasses are one of them....costas, ray bans etc all worth every penny.
Why do you say this? Not being a smart arse. I want to know you're rationale.

I have a pair of Ray Bans in one vehicle, older(free)Mauis in another, some gas station polarized as back ups on one boat and Wiley X in my fishing bag. The Wiley X have foam on the rim so I don't get that weird air flow into my eyeballs while driving the boat, but aside from that I could care less which ones I wear. I actually had a pair I bought at Bass Pro a while back for 20 bucks I believe that were by far my favorite, but I lost the damn things.

For someone who fishes as much as I do I can tell a difference in comfort and clarity. Not uncommon for me to spend 8-12 hours on the river so comfort is a must. the clarity combined with my specific lenses make a noticeable difference in seeing fish in moving water with a variety of light conditions

Costco is the second largest seller of eyewear, and they make Italian made sunglasses that sell for less than 30 dollars. Anyone who has owned a pair of Kirkland sunglasses will tell you their quality is on par with the big names.
I bought a pair of $40 Kirkland wayfarers a month ago and I've been pretty happy with them.

no lie berkeley brand polarized in the sporting goods section at Wal Mart are very respectable quality for $9.99.

I wore $45 pairs of Suncloud Excursions for about 5-6 years(probably went through a pair a year). Just got a $200 pair of Maui's. They aren't 5 times better by any stretch. Those Sunclouds are very well made, polarized sunglasses. When these Maui's wear out, I'm going back to the $45 pair of shades

I go cheap on my sunglasses but splurge on my frat straps.

The reason sunglasses are so expensive is because one company has a monopoly on the whole industry. This sixty minutes piece is a bit dated, but Luxottica has only acquired more companies since then.
60 minutes on why sunglasses are so expensive
It is literally an illusion of choice and most of the same materials going into the Ray Ban and Oakley sunglasses are being used on target optical.
Sure they are better than the 10 dollar Chinese plastic, but 300 dollars is just pure profit.

Luxottica owns all these companies, they force sellers to only carry their brands or they refuse to stock them. If you are selling sunglasses and are not selling Luxottica brands you are probably going out of business. So no one has any incentive to come up with a comparable brand.
I've mentioned Luxottica whenever I see a sunglasses/glasses thread pop up. It's one of the biggest retail scams out there. I always lose my sunglasses, became fed up with losing $200+ shades, so I started buying cheapo Chinese. I tried a pair of the Kirkland signature shades, and loved them. I've probably bought 5-6 pairs in the last year.
I've been buying the Italian glasses. They have a Japanese pair that look very similar, but have a really thin temples, and a springed hinge, but Bucky the same lenses. They are identical quality as I've seen from any name brand.

Bunch of people getting played by Luxottica in this thread.

I have rayban wayfarers that are not worth the extra money. They are the $99 non-polarized version. You are laying for the Rayban logo, and I realized that when I pruchased.
There is a visable difference and feel whem I wear my costas. Is the quality worth $275? I'm not sure, but the are a lot better than anything I've ever tried off the cheapo rack. The 580 lenses truly cut glare and are very clear. I wear them while driving in rainstorms on the interstate because they help cut through the glare of the white mist kicked up by cars. They wont completely cut out glare on the water at 7 a.m., but they'll make it possible to keep fishing towards the east when it otherwise would be nearly impossible to bear.

I lose mine too much to buy namebrands. There is a noticeable difference, but not when I only get to wear them for a month before losing em.
