If name brands are so cheap to produce, why aren't knock offs (like at the mall) even close to the same weight and feel.

Blows my mind.

Thanks for listening

I lost my Costas recently and I bought a pair of Polaroids at Dillards in Metarie. They don't look that great, but they actually work better than my Costas.

I know this has little to do with what you said, but oh well.

I have no issues with the name brands charging any price they want. Free market.

Just baffling that China can't put an extra $4 into the production, charge $40 and blow out the designers.

I mean you should at least cite your sources. For all I know, you read some stupid article on Facebook claiming the above...

Having owned name brand vs. knockoff, they're not the same...at all. Looks wise, maybe, but you can feel the difference when you wear them long periods of time

Knockoffs for me. I am way too hard on sunglasses to spend that kind of money on them.

I thought same thing until I bought a pair of Mauis........best part about being hard on your sunglasses in the great warranty or replacement prices......

I only buy the cheap ones because I know I will break/lose them in a matter of weeks.

Also, certain name brands are known for having much better lenses than the el cheapos(ex Maui Jims, etc). I recently splurged on prescription Maui Jim sunglasses(needed to spend FSA money before I lost it for the year) and I absolutely love them.

I've only ever worn ray ban but you can definitely tell the difference in quality.

The price isn't that great either--$60-100 for non-polarized if you can find a deal. Especially if you aren't prone to losing them.

I agree.

I have Costa's ray bans ect... Recently waiting in line at Dicks to check out picked up a pair of Peppers "Stockton" off the Spinny thing for $40 bucks and I wear them more than any of my others. They're polarized like my others and I don't have to worry about scratching or losing them.

The reason sunglasses are so expensive is because one company has a monopoly on the whole industry. This sixty minutes piece is a bit dated, but Luxottica has only acquired more companies since then.

60 minutes on why sunglasses are so expensive

It is literally an illusion of choice and most of the same materials going into the Ray Ban and Oakley sunglasses are being used on target optical.

Sure they are better than the 10 dollar Chinese plastic, but 300 dollars is just pure profit.

Costco is the second largest seller of eyewear, and they make Italian made sunglasses that sell for less than 30 dollars. Anyone who has owned a pair of Kirkland sunglasses will tell you their quality is on par with the big names.

Luxottica owns all these companies, they force sellers to only carry their brands or they refuse to stock them. If you are selling sunglasses and are not selling Luxottica brands you are probably going out of business. So no one has any incentive to come up with a comparable brand.

Some things should not be generic; sunglasses are one of them....costas, ray bans etc all worth every penny.
