In May I'm going to Boston for a few days then driving up the Maine coast to fly out of Portland.

I prefer outdoor activities like climbing and biking so Seattle and Portland setup better for me personally
Maine has some of the greatest hiking trails in the US if you decide on the eastern Portland.

If you go to the NW, Mt. St. Helens is a must visit on the way between Portland and Seattle. It's not too far out of the way and not something you'll see basically anywhere else in the world.

I thought Providence was a great destination according to the internet
Unless it has changed from the time I was in the military I would say there are an assortment of better options.

I'd rank them:
Seattle & Portland
Boston & Maine
Boston & Providence
I've been to Seattle several times, have family up there to visit. I went to Portland last Summer and really enjoyed it, there is a great food scene, and it's craft beer heaven. Plus there is a lot of outdoors activities in the area. Also went to Boston last Summer (and Cape Cod) and really enjoyed it as well. Hit up a Red Sox game, plenty of great places to eat, and lots of history. I went to Portland, ME in 2013 and really enjoyed it as well, but it's much much smaller than any other place you listed.
