Yes, it's called positive reinforcement. It works better than negative every time. You know, "good job," along with CONSTRUCTIVE, INFORMATIVE, INSTRUCTIONAL criticism, when warranted. ... It's a pretty well-known fact that people who are constant & consistent a-holes to their children produce a-holes
Well there is a semi-famous "progressive educator" that has equated rewards to bribery; unfortunate, for this educator, many of his views are not supported by the empirical-research (especially when it is quantitative). From reading LeagueChamps' posts on this issue and ones on education, I'm beginning to think that he is a follower of this educator's methods.

My dad made be bury my dog when I was in the 8th grade.
I loved that dog.
So I can empathize, but some of these people take it to next level.
It's embarrassing.

I tell my students at school that they're special--just like everyone else.

Usually goes over really well with high schoolers that have an overinflated ego.

I am more of a process reinforcer than a person reinforcer

The study dealt with parents who positively reinforced what a special 'person' their kids were, when in reality they are probably just as average as the next guy

I reinforced the positive aspects of my kids efforts. I never once made them feel they were special people. They knew life was hard, unfair, and required some luck in order to succeed. All of them graduated with honors, scholarships that covered everything, and are well compensated in their chosen professions. They all also choose to spend all holidays, and most vacations with us. So I dont think we damaged them very much

Wut?

I think most parents falsely praise their kids, and yet I oppose the failure rate of CC tests because I think they are developmentally inappropriate, and thusly too harsh .... and you somehow find a sameness in those philosophies

OK. lol

Narcissistic individuals think they’re better than everyone else, live for personal success and expect exceptional treatment, explained the authors of the study that appeared in the latest issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Since when did this become a bad thing?

So my guess may have been incorrect. Have you heard of Alfie Kohn?

The study is bullshite and a blanket statement. Anyone with Managerial skills understands that all people are different and you have to deal with them based on their personality. It's no different with kids. My Son and my Daughter are polar opposites when it comes to how they deal with discipline.

We shouldn't criticize the study when the problem is other's extrapolating the results.
