Isn't it plausible that the a person with narcissistic-tendencies, will over-praise their children, because they see their children as extension and reflection of their already over-inflated self? So even if they changed their parenting style, the children may already be more likely to have narcissistic-tendencies. Although I'm sure their parenting contributed, I would like to control for the parent's traits before even thinking about making causal statements.

Even so what would you think if people kept telling you that you were 'special'?

I tend to see it as parents living vicariously through their kids

You may have started a meme

"Your parents praised you a lot, didn't they?"

I would rather take credit for "I'd like to buy you for what you're worth and sell you for what you think you're worth".

Yeah. It's just that those people are more likely to possess those traits consistent with, or closely related to, narcissism. This is more likely to be passed on regardless, although their over-praise only reinforces the skewed view of themselves and the world.

I was told that I was nothing special. With that being reinforced on a daily basis I turned into a little sociopath it is a constant struggle to try to stay human

In the rare event that I got second place at something, I was pissed off, even as a kid. Second place means you lost in my mind. Doesn't matter if you are ahead of 1000 people, you still lost. Hell, I get angry when I don't get the best grade on tests (rarely happens).

Some people are born competitors, and some are not. Praising a non-competitive kid for losing only reinforces bad performances. They will forever be okay with not being the best.

Or the mama's boy, mommy's little prince?

It's stupid how much people will always coddle and shelter their opposite sex child.

Mama's boy, daddy's girl....

Just like the kids in that study, you have to let go of your parents conditioning and demonstrate your uniqueness to those few individuals that you want to share the rest of your life with

Without being a jerk, or sociopath

A while back I read a study that prisoners have the highest esteem.
Prisoners have higher self-esteem than community members

Parents that treat their kids like they are the next big thing in life aRe almost as bad as the people on here that treat the death of their dog as a life changing event.

I am known among family and friends as a loving and affectionate person. This did not come naturally to me. I also try to be extremely humble in everything that I do. I have a violent past. I have turned away from such behavior. I would defend my family if necessary but that is all.
