This is why these "studies" are misleading, and usually ridiculous. ... There is a gargantuan difference between "praising" children and telling them they are "superior" to others. I would hope that anyone with an ounce of common sense would know this. ... Praise for doing their best regardless of outcome - YES. Teach them to be self absorbed, entitled, elitist asshats by telling them they are "better" than others - NO. ... Huge difference.

So what exactly are you praising them for?

For doing what is expected?
For trying their best?

Thats the point of the study. If you continue to falsely prop up your childs self-esteem, then they cant handle it when their peers dont glow on about their averageness

Yes, it's called positive reinforcement. It works better than negative every time. You know, "good job," along with CONSTRUCTIVE, INFORMATIVE, INSTRUCTIONAL criticism, when warranted. ... It's a pretty well-known fact that people who are constant & consistent assholes to their children produce assholes.

Just so we are clear, where do you stand? Are you against praise and reinforcement altogether?

What if your child has self-esteem issues? Do you try to encourage them and try to build it up or tell them to deal with it? I'm wondering how many people in this thread have kids.

Well, I am special, and my parents told me that. My parents never told my sister that, and she's far more narcissistic than I am.

If there's no communication, you don't have anything, good or bad reinforcement, even if you have to use your phone to communicate with them.

I have kids, if they do good, I say good job little men. If they disappoint, I say I am disappointed, usually for just being disobedient. I don't know what else people do, and frankly I don't give a damn. I will raise my kids just how I feel is proper.

What does this mean?

I love dogs.
Had one ever since I've been alive... Prob 6-7 of them total.
But they aren't humans and to treat than as such is amazes me.
I don't get it.
Furthermore, people that treat them that way want everybody else to do the same.

That's what's amazing.
And retarded.

The thing is, you've got to be able to recognize your kid's strengths or wants and help them get there.

I am not a parent, but I have seen Stepbrothers like 100 times

I might not get it either, but I'm not going to criticize them for being emotional when a pet they've had for 10-20 yrs dies.
