Study: Letting teens sleep in would save the United States roughly $9 billion a year

The United States would realize roughly $9 billion a year in economic gains by instituting a simple, nationwide policy change: starting public school classes no earlier than 8:30 a.m.
That's according to an exhaustive new study by the Rand Corporation, the first of its kind to model the nationwide costs and benefits of later school start times.
The economic benefits would come primarily from two sources: greater academic performance (and hence, lifetime earnings) among more well-rested students, and reduced rates of car crashes among sleepy adolescent drivers.
Those benefits would greatly outweigh the annual costs of implementing the policy change, which include the price of reorganizing school bus schedules (estimated at $150 per student per year) and a flat, one-time cost of $110,000 per school to install additional infrastructure, like lighting, to support later dismissals, sports team practices and other student activities.

So what about elementary schools which start an hour later? Would we move those back an hour as well? Since most bus drivers drive for both High School/Middle School and Elementary

Yeah, but then local police would write fewer school zone tickets during morning commutes. Can't lose that revenue stream.

Move the elementary schools earlier since the sleep issue is more impactful for high schooler. Problem, like, solved.

Younger kids do better earlier in the day, teens need more sleep.
There are schools in Arizona (Yuma I think) that start high school later a couple days a week and the younger kids get out earlier a couple days a week. Great for the kids. Sucks for the parents.
At least they were doing this about 10'years ago. Not sure if still doing it.

Just cut out school altogether , should've some good savings. A lot aren't being taught anyway.

Did some quick digging. The lack of sleep presents similar issues across all ages groups, but it seems teens have more issues with melatonin releasing later in night than pre-teens and most adults causing the lack of sleep to be more prevalent in that age group.

Awesome sauce.

This is something that should have been implemented years ago.
School should start later, have a shorter duration so afternoons are still free, and have more school days through the year.

Waking up earlier than you would like ?!?! Your brain isn't fully rested and recovered from the previous day ?! All while having mandatory attendance at a particular place when you'd rather be somewhere else ?! It's almost like schools are trying to prepare high school kids for the working world which is only a few short years away....
Then high school kids need to put their phone away and get some quality rest if they want to outperform their peers... The same can be said for many adults.
I understand that it's a study and these were findings but seriously ?!? Fewer car wrecks... Teens are always going to be more accident prone on the roads... Again, phones are the driving factor (no pun intended), not sleep deprivation.

School day should be 6 hours and go for 200 days instead of 180

Studies like this have been out for years. There are probably many of them pre-cell phone era.

That report is flawed. Teens will adjust to the later wake time and stay up later. The same as any normal person with a brain would do.
