If it was murder, then I think its too clever for a Florida criminal to pull off. German, sure, but a baffling death where there are no signs, can't see a criminal from Florida figuring that out. Going with a OD/suicide pact.

They probably had enough concern for the children to pull over on the highway and put their hazards on. That way, someone is eventually bound to stop to check the car and find the kids. They did it outside the car so the kids wouldn't see them do it. Notice the phrasing.
