You still have to clean the rubber part.

I have a front loader. I wipe down the gasket after each load & leave the door open. I also use the washing machine cleaner 1 x a month.
Use the cleaner 3 days in a row if the machine smells bad.

If you have some pool shock, run a couple of empty cycles with it.

Make sure all the pastic is whiped down with some type of bleach solution.

And moving forward, don't leave your wet clothes in the washer.

Quit using dryer sheets. I think they contribute to the problem.

How does using dryer sheets contribute to the washer stinking?

I use the all free and clear liquid, because tide liquid will go bad, it starts to smell rancid after awhile and will make your clothes stink.

Make sure to leave the door open between washes. That made a world of difference with mine, however it never made my clothes smell so it may be a bigger issue.

Take your clothes out immediately after and leave your washer's door open between washings.

You may have to run a couple cycles with vinegar. If that doesn't work, check out you tube on how to remove the agitator (it's easy) and clean it really well

The wax on the sheets screws with the drying ability (wicking) of your clothes.

re: Stinky washing machine remedies
I know when we had the smell problem someone told us that the dryer sheets left a film on the towels that could contribute to the smell and I guess it could come off in the washer.

We quit using them and the problem went away. Whether it's really related or not I don't know but now we very very rarely have to do the clean out/run bleach through thing.

Pour white vinegar into all of the receptacles and run it empty.
