Supposedly one of the hardest things ever.... I'm tempted to try out a 5 minute set at an upcoming open mic night at the comedy club I frequent.

Have any OT'ers tried this before? Are there any sites you'd recommend for tips? Any ways to vet your material to see if you're potentially pulling a Carlos Mencia and stealing people's already used jokes?

TIA, mates

Thanks, mate. Since SFP is an expert on literally every topic known to man, I'm really looking forward to his input as well.

A comedian/writer is mostly born by years of neglect, traumatizing experiences, and/or some sort of alcoholic/drug addiction...

There was a documentary type film on Netflix not too long ago about hecklers. Not sure if it's still up. It pretty much says all stand up comics, no matter how good or bad, catch shite from hecklers. You better prepare yourself for that.

Practice in front of a mirror or if possible video yourself to review.

Repetition, repetition, repetition. By the time you go on stage you should be able to mindlessly and seamlessly perform your bits.

Write drunk, edit sober, perform somewhere in between.

Best advice you'll ever get is "don't let them see you're nervous". You're gonna be nervous but the more you can fake that you're not, the better you'll do.

And that's probably the only serious advice you'll get. Obligatory, you're going to fail and your mother is a whore.

Disagree.

Stay fricked up. Write fricked up. Preform even more fricked up....

Meh, works for some people. But for some people this can totally kill any feeling of being laid back trying to make people laugh. To each his own.

(I said "his" own, cause women aren't funny....... Just kidding, kinda)
