St John Parish police...am I screwed?

During the holidays, I was driving to New Orleans. In the right lane, cruise control on 72 in a 70mph zone.
I pass a sheriff's car on the shoulder. See that he pulls out after we pass him. Behind me then pulls me over.
i'm thinking "oh crap, maybe that was a 65MPH zone."
Says he clocked me at 87MPH. Which is beyond laughable.
Anyway out of this other than flying back and showing up in court?
It's fricking ridiculous.

Just go see if DA will reduce to non moving or article 897. It's really not worth fighting.

Ask to see the dashboard cam footage that correlates the gun time stamp

They actually did this to me a few years ago. He pulled 3 cars over and said I was going 87 when I knew I wasn't. I was young and terrified though so I just paid it, it was my first ticket.
Now I'm wishing I would have argued it. That's a little too coincidental for my liking.

Podunk cops gonna Podunk.
The judge will likely be in the same social and political circles as the sheriff. You will have to pay.

Where were you? There is only a small stretch of interstate where the speed limit is 70 mph (most everywhere else is 60).
If you go talk to the ADA and explain your situation, I'm sure they'll be lenient. I hear he's a stand up guy.

At least take it to court and like the above poster said, ask to see the dash cam video. Even if you do have to pay, it'll probably be reduced. At the very least, remain calm in court, lay out the facts and try to embarrass the cop. There are plenty of good cops, but sounds like he isn't one of them.

This happened to me also except they said I was going 82. I had the cruise on 70 because we were all leaving work and we knew cops were shooting radar on the way home. I just paid it because it's not worth the trouble. I did it pretty quick and it ended up not being on my record.

Does Louisiana have a reciprocity agreement with the state you live in? Do you plan on spending a lot of time in Louisiana? If not, frick those hicks. Its a parish income supplement, nothing more.
Not sure you could beat it straight up, would cost an expensive, parish connected lawyer. Not worth your money to fly back, but if you have family in the area, you could designate proxy and fight it (if they are willing to help).
Unfortunately you traveled through a white trash shite hole. It happens in every state.

That sucks. I got a ticket on my way to Dallas, close to Shreveport, the damn thing was $288. Like my dad said, that is where they get most of their money from. Still makes me mad

I just went through this shite with that podunk place. St John has a first offenders program if you havent had a moving violation in the past 5 years you can pay the fine and have it not go against you

St. John Parish is the worst. I remember almost going to jail and having my car impounded for allegedly doing 90 in a 70 and swerving at 4am on my way to Baton Rouge from New Orleans.
The ticket was $400 and I was told to pull over at the rest stop and sleep it off until dawn or else go to jail.

Your Dad was spot on. Some of these communities would dry up without this source of revenue. Heck, some of them project future budgets with it.

Pay the fine. It's not worth it. To all reading this: the worst speed trap I know of is Emporia, VA. You can drive through going the exact speed limit and be Mother Teresa and you get pulled over. Most especially all out of state plates.

You all realize that what ya'll are accusing these cops of doing is a serious crime, right?
Somebody should entrap these cops by recording everything and getting pulled over while doing the speed limit.
