Spinoff - You're Not A Medical Professional And Witness An Accident

If there was a fire or other immediate danger my instincts would be to help get people out of immediate danger. In this scenario, however, people in the vehicles are seriously injured and are incapacitated and unconscious, but to your knowledge are in no other immediate danger other than the injuries the wreck caused. You've called 911, an ambulance is on the way. Other than going over to ask if everyone is OK, do you try to help? On one hand you risk being sued by the person or people you help if your assistance inadvertently causes further injury (or death). On the other hand if you don't help you risk having charges filed against you for not providing assistance. What do you do?

never move them
you could do more harm than good

lean in the window, tell them to stop being a pussy, grab em by the hair and yank em out of the car...go on about your business.

Most states have good Samaritan laws. If you do not know someone's condition and they are not in immediate harm, it's best to not move them.

So in the incident where:
quote:
A northern Ohio man who recorded grisly cellphone video of a car crash that killed one teenager and critically injured another has been sentenced to 30 days in jail.
Other than the filming of the incident, what would you have done different?

Good Samaritan laws are in place to minimize this

So you would attempt to help?

did he call 911?
and I'm sure it was the filming it that got him in trouble

If I see a wreck, ive stopped and seen if they are ok. If they are breathing normally and mentally coherent, I wont touch them and I'll leave. No way am I giving my name or profession to have it come back and bite me in the arse. If they are critically injured or its a life and death situation, Ill do whatever it takes, but I still will never give my name out unless I legally have to.
NEVER move someone that is injured unless death is immenent, fire, sinking car etc

If the victim is in no immediate danger from some other factor (car on fire, etc.), you shouldn't move them. If they've sustained some sort of neck injury, you can cause much greater damage by moving them.
Call 911, stay with them in case they stop breathing or the car catches on fire, and wait for the professionals to get there.

So you can't help, and you also can't film? If you're not supposed to help, I'm not quite sure why filming would be illegal. Unethical, maybe, but illegal? Not sure why.

I am a medical professional, so yes I would help.

Good Samaritan law
You don't have to help anybody, anywhere, at anytime.
That principle is what this country was founded on.

Friend of mine lost her 3 oldest children in a car accident(she was at work when this happened). A woman at the scene went to the overturned vehicle and saw that one of the children was still alive at the time and crying. The woman couldn't get the child out but sat there and held the child's hand until EMS arrived. Sadly the child passed away before they arrived. My friend has talked about it and said it was of some comfort to her that her little girl wasn't alone and that her last moments were at least with someone comforting her.
Point is......just being there could be all you could do at the scene ....but it still can make a difference
