Someone doesn't want private citizens in space...

The spaceplanes be crashing all the sudden. They don't want us to see what actually goes on up there.
I'm not saying anything...
But...
Aliens..

United Space Alliance made human space flight look simple and routine
It is neither of those things.
Human rated rockets and human space flight is complex and dangerous, despite the advancement in materials and manufacturing processes.

It is amazing how few disasters we have had. The physics behind it is astounding.

Yeah...the whole thread was kind of tongue in cheek...
You don't hear about all the successful flights..
Still, makes me wonder.

There was usually a significant anomaly on just about every flight, especially with Apollo.
Tiny little stupid things like changing the formula of the propellant in the adhesion spray or changing the voltage of a sensor have unintended, critical consequences.
It will be difficult for a private enterprise, operating for a profit, to manage all of these variables.
IMO.

We have had countless unmanned boosters blow up on, and off the pad, lost 2 out of 5 space shuttles, lost 17 astronauts, 18 counting the Virgin Atlantic pilot, several more killed in training, plus numerous close calls such as Apollo 13. Other countries engaged in space exploration are not envious of the U.S. record.

Other countries haven't done anything remotely close to the United States.
Russia has the Soyuz and while it is a servicaeble craft, it isn't a pimple on the Shuttle's butt.
"Other countries" , at least not the loser ones, are indeed envious of our record.
We were so far ahead we intimidated them into giving up.

Afreka is 1000 years behind the space program of the USA, but they have way more UFO sightings....

Should we be bragging about a Shuttle program that never achieved its original design criteria, and two of five spacecraft and crews were lost? Russia had a shuttle, it made one unmanned orbital mission, and the program was canceled due to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. It had many features that may have resulted in safer operation, one being no solid rocket boosters.
I should have previously said that while other countries may be envious of the accomplishments of the U.S. program, they would not want to duplicate the safety record.

To be fair, the Soviets/Russians killed more personnel than we did, and no one else has remotely tried to accomplish what we have yet. When the Chinese and Indians start pushing the envelope, let's see what their safety record looks like.

You have got to be kidding. Do you know how many cosmonauts Russia has lost?

Well, now that you've changed your statement, it's pretty obvious you're trolling.

The Antares rocket that just exploded was using the Russian space shuttle engines. They lost an AJ26 engine on the test stand at Stennis, and now one in flight. I'm going to see the crater this week, and check on the ground support equipment.

We are much further along than most even with NASA being defunded. I don't think the Russians would be very forthcoming on their losses at all. When you push the boundaries of exploration you will have casualties. Think of all the deaths when people were exploring the New World. Just because we have better technology doesn't mean it won't happen.

theres the answer to the problems. amazing that we took one of our biggest achievements that led to incredible technology jumps and just said "thats enough"

Agreed.
Even with China stealing as much as they possibly can, they are still way behind and will remain so.
It is in Russia's nature to lie and cover up any loss or setback. That doesn't change no matter what they are calling themselves these days.

Or more of the cost cutting to maximize profits.
One makes Rockets for delivering payloads to NASA, yet relies on 30 year old USSR rocket motors, the other switched from a tried and true rubber/NO2 fuel that has been used since the 30's successfully to a new polymer based fuel, and we see the results.
The new fuel was to be cheaper, the used motors are cheaper than developing one's own. Here we see the perils of privatization in space. Is there something worse than the lowest bidder? I think we have found it.
NASA wasn't in it to make profits, they are in it to further exploration. Yes it is a "waste" of money in many ways, but it's a better waste than many others.

I think you have to look at NASA as a long term investment. Looking at what we have gained I think the "wasted money" is sort of a wash. A lot of times we are in uncharted territory and you have to accept the failures. Every now and then you get a huge success like the Mars Rover and that makes it all worth it imo.

Excellent post and spot on.
There's a reason NASA is going "back to the future" with it's next human spaceflight program.
Safety is paramount when putting humans into space and NASA knows this.
