So what is the big debate on french door fridges vs side-by-side?

Are people going away from french door on the bottom units?
Having never had one and in the market for a new fridge, I wanted to get some type of consensus.
I'm not into fads and don't want to make a $2000 mistake.
TIA!

I don't know why anyone would want a side by side, they are pretty much useless
I have a french door fridge and like it
I think the new trend is to go back to the full door fridge with top freezer though

I wouldn't go side by side... I'd either go french door w/ freezer on bottom or a typical freezer on top both full doors.
A side by side seems like it would waste a lot of space, your divider runs the full height of the fridge instead of the shorter distance across the width.

You're still stuck on this fridge search aren't you?
Read some amazon reviews and pick one out...oh wait.

CAD, make sure you know your counter/cabinet depth. Will dictate on whether you get a "full size" fridge or a "counter mount" depth.
Counter Mounts are significantly more expensive. Or at least they were in my experience. Crazy to think a Fridge with less storage area and smaller overall can cost a thousand dollars more, but whatevs.

This is why I don't want to be old.

We have a side-by-side and I like it, we have 6 in our family and it is just fine for us. The french door with the freezer on the bottom is a pain.

We have the French door side by side with the freezer drawer at the bottom.
Pros - you have more configuration options with your shelves in the fridge since the fridge is wider than the side by side.
Cons - your freezer will seem smaller. I have a full freezer out in the garage for the big items because of this.
Hope this helps. Just remember to get a wifi fridge for your future home automation projects.

One person said something negative about french door fridges and it's making you question everything you ever thought you knew about fridges?

Something we are considering when we build is to get a freezerless fridge, and have a stand up deep freeze in a near by utility room. She also wants an ice maker/machine as well. Don't know what your plans are. Maytag and Kenmore make one.

I've had a French door for about a year now. It was a first for me and don't think I'd go back unless I had no other choice. Then I'd buy a deep freezer. Not really sure why it's always described as a pain in the arse....
I like it, of course I don't mind bending over to get stuff out of it. I like the fact that I can put racks of ribs, whole frozen chickens or anything odd shaped that wouldn't stack well in a side by side with ease. Tack that aspect of it along with my vacuum sealer and I can put a boat load of shite in it. Also, has a top sliding drawer in it that I keep frozen veges, fruits etc.
My only complaint is the lack of ice in the maker. I assume that varys by brand though... Doesn't affect me terribly b/c we have room for drinks and shite in the fridge itself
