You think someone is going to pay less for your house because the people next door happened to have a rusty truck in the driveway at the time of showing/house purchase?

It would make me look harder at the neighborhood. Just like if I see a bunch of crappy cars with rims.

I don't have the time or patience to explain to someone that they are making the neighborhood look trashy and breaking a rule. I pay my hoa to handle that shite. It's not "tattling" in grown up land.
I would prefer to talk to someone face to face if I know they're renters and otherwise good people. Like I said, most likely they have no clue. Landlords typically don't give you the HOA covenants when you sign a lease.
Now if I talk to them and nothing changes, then definitely I would go to the HOA. Not saying there is anything wrong with letting the HOA handle it from the get go, I'd just prefer to talk to the guy if possible/practical.

HOA are the worst things about neighborhoods. Stop worrying about what other people have on their property and just worry about yours.

No. They just won't make an offer to begin with.
I think you're underestimating how discriminating house hunters could be, especially if a woman is involved.

That's fine and I'm not saying not to talk to them. I don't think approaching the makes you an a-hole any more than contacting the hoa makes you a pussy. Both legitimate means to correct a problem.
I have a feeling that someone who thinks it's OK to leave a rusty piece of shite on the lawn will not respect the lack of authority of their neighbors.

I wouldn't even put in an offer if I saw that next door.

Could this guy put a car cover over it and be done with it?
that would be even worse
Posted on 7/7/14 at 8:07 am to GRTiger
I would offer triple the asking price.

A car with a cover is worse than a rusty piece of shite exposed to the world?

Buy the guy a car cover and put it in the car. When he gets back, reveal that you did that for him for two reasons (good neighbor so it is not hauled off, and the eyesore reference). Tell him how much and let him thank you with a cash refund.

I'm not following this either. For all people know their is a Ferrari under there. Seems like a cheap compromise.

The car belongs to the tennant, not the homeowner. I got a nasty gram in the mail when I first moved in about the upkeep of my flower beds. I know someone is out there driving around watching.

If you don't like HOA's, don't move in a neighborhood with one. I don't have a problem with them. They serve a purpose if it's operated properly.

It should take care of itself then.
I also misread and thought this car was on the lawn. Not as big of a deal if it's in the driveway, and they might not be breaking any rules.

A cover probably violates the rules as well.

So where do you and your mom live?
Posted on 7/7/14 at 8:18 am to LSUnGA
if its been there a month, chances are the HOA has already sent them a letter in the mail. I would wait a little while and see if the situation resolves itself.
