One of the few structural advantages that NO has is that it's compact - except for the East, which is huge and half-empty. It's probably very easy to find square miles without a single cop to be found out there.

I bet it was one of the genrificators.

cant claim to have done any digging, but especially the last few years i have heard some rumblings that a big part of that is the improved medical treatment that victims are receiving
It's definitely a factor, but it doesn't come close to making up the huge decrease seen around the country and especially in Nola.
And part of the reason why i love new orleans is the density of population due to geography.
Living in Houston now, everything is so spread out that it can diminish the crime issues (like murder rates and crime rates) the city faces. I had my vehicle broken into twice this month. Had another friend have hers broken into along with another friend. This is in a very nice area too. But what most cities with consider suburbs are in the Houston city limits

I'm also waiting for someone to blame AirBnb.

I went on NOLA.com to try and read more about this story, and stumbled upon three other crimes involving a gun in which the suspects race was not disclosed. frick these people.

Suspect's race dosn't matter. Suspect was likely forced into committing these "crimes" due to their socioeconomically depressed and justice-involved condition.
We have only ourselves to blame for this.

A white girl from BR was murdered in Nola last night. Didn't see it in the news.

The East is like the wild wild west, there are only 8-9 officers patrolling the largest area of the city.
Crazy to think.
I went to Eastover the other day and security there is tighter than English Turn by far.

Nola East is basically another city. Crime seems to have fallen in the real New Orleans.
I always thought NOLA East should leave the city proper but stay in the parish.
Elect it's own mayor and council and then parcel out land for dirt cheap to large operations that could benefit being close to 59, 10 and 12. Have little to no taxes to lure in new jobs and then lower tax rates for people in the city. Then build up houses for police and give them the houses to live in, payment free while they work on the force. (to keep NOEPD in the neighborhoods)
There are more than enough homeowners in the east to cover basic tax needs. No need to raise anything, and by designating a large industrial area you could create a city of industry in a prime spot.
It is sad that we outsiders see the east as crap and hood filled, when many parts of it are quite nice and have great stately homes.

New Orleans East blows NBR out of the water. I've been all over the east, day and night, and it has some of the worst and bizarre areas I've ever seen. Cars burning in the middle of the street with no one around, front yards with grass taller than 5 feet, people duking around ever corner when lights hit them. Hate how people throw around the third world country line but it is as close as I've ever seen in the US

Getting shot in the face is an epidemic in Nola.

Sounds like they need BRPD to respond to this one.

Well there was just two masked gunmen that tried to rob Lakeview Harbor on Harrison Ave. in Lakeview tonight. Shot fired at a worker but missed. They fled down Bragg Street.
Wait...the spot by Velvet Cactus and St. Dominic???
Holy shite. That place is in on strip mall looking area. I've got a cousin who just dropped $500,000 for a house on Colbert by that area. You really can't go anywhere in New Orleans and be reasonably certain you are safe.
