Skip Bertman victim of home invasion?

Baton Rouge police Saturday were investigating what they are calling a home invasion at an address off Brightside Drive near LSU that records indicate is the residence of legendary LSU baseball coach and former Athletic Director Skip Bertman.

Police were called to the 2900 block of Ormond Ave. about 4:40 a.m. in response to a reported home invasion, Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, a police spokesman, said Saturday afternoon.

“From what detectives have told me, they believe this victim was targeted,” McKneely said.

McKneely would not divulge the victims’ identities or ages, but records show the address is Bertman’s residence. Efforts to reach Bertman on Saturday afternoon were not successful.

The burglar broke into the home through a window, McKneely said.

Sometime after breaking into the home, the burglar encountered a male victim in an unknown part of the home and the two scuffled, McKneely said.

The victim was able to fight off the burglar, who fled the residence with some small objects and cash, McKneely said, though he declined to identify what the items were because of the investigation.

He said the victims did not know the burglar and were not able to give a full description because it was dark. McKneely said he was unsure if the burglar was injured in the scuffle.

McKneely said it is an ongoing investigation.
