This is crazy

This is what they pulled from the Black Box of Sully's plane and if you watch carefully you can see the flock of birds hit. Down in the lower corner you can follow the conversation with the tower and the conversation with the two pilots in the cockpit. In the upper right corner is the altitude gage. They lose power from both engines but just before they land the copilot sees they have a bit left in the left so they re-power it and it gives him what he needs. The map of the areas below show the two options of other airports they try and direct them to. Wow! This is really cool. Black Box Generated View of Hudson Plane Landing

This is computer generated from the black box

It's weird to hear how calm he is during the whole ordeal

I'd never step on a plane again.

That guy was unbelievable.

Hahaha the poor guy on the ground is trying everything to get them down somewhere. Sully is like nope, the Hudson, and just ignored the rest.

People that lose there cool under stress usually don't make it through the early stages of training to be a pilot. The are a lot of cockpit recordings available of pilots in situations that have the potential to end badly and most did, in all of them the pilots maintained a calm professional demeanor.

This is audio from United Crash in Iowa some years ago.

Why do that when you can go in the Hudson like a boss?

Yep. The United Express crash in Buffalo a few years back due to icing on the wings was terrible to listen/read. Both panicked and likely could have performed some controlled landing that would have been less devastating.

I haven't read a ton about this (would rather not know about plane crashes) but was the Hudson considered a preferable alternative because they weren't sure they could make it to Teterboro and the potential loss of life was much less on the river instead of over residential and commercial areas?

Probably. If he had no power, the chances of making it were slim and if he failed, there's a good chance of ground casualties. I think he made the right choice.
