The rationale is that most guns are used in training or recreational purposes. Even with hearing protection, repeated exposure to loud noises negatively impacts hearing.

Easier/cheaper access to silencers is a health and safety issue.

Hearing protection. As you know, silencers aren't silent.

Fortuntely, there’s an existing technology to address that which doesn’t minimize potential witnesses to crime.

Yeah. People need to look at a decibel chart, then look at how much suppressors/muffs/plugs actually reduce dBs. Then realize you're dealing with levels of energy on a logarithmic scale, meaning the higher you go, the more the value means. 60 dBs is a 10 fold increase in energy from 50, etc.

well given the name "silencer," I figured you would be able to tell what its main purpose is

Better control and reduced noise would make a gun safer so I don't see how this is about safety.

Usually these things boil down to the "chip away" method, as I like to call it.

You'll never pass legislation with an outright ban on guns, which is what many Progressives want.

But you take little by little, convincing people each time it's a reasonable compromise, and before you know it they have what they want.

Many people on the other side recognize these devious ways, so they aren't so quick to give up any ground.

I know it's purpose but I was asking the main argument in favor of them. I didn't realize hearing protection was that big of a deal (I NOW KNOW IT IS). I was wondering if hunting or something like that was the main point.

My major reason is courtesy to neighbors. Shooting is a very loud hobby. Be nice to pop some off in areas that get more congested without alerting the surrounding area. My gun range has been surrounded by neighborhoods that are complaining about noise already when they planted themselves around us in the first place.

Same with hunting, lots of populated areas have hunting areas that would surprise people.

Bolt action and subsonic, I'm guessing? My 10/22 still has some sound to it even with subsonic and my spectre II on it.

1. Propaganda
2. Hollywood bullshite
3. General anti-gun, and this would be a sub issue to that

Wait - these are the reasons for silencer regulations.

Suppressed 5.56 makes around 130 dB. 120 is a jet taking off so far from silent. Instant hearing loss is around 140 dB.

but what is the rationale for silencers?

To kill as many of the field destroying hogs as possible before they know what's up.

my friend gets paid to clear gophers and other pests on ranchers property.

He doesn't make much if they all scatter after the 1st shot. And he'd be there all damn day.

I know of no users that call them silencers. They are suppressors because they do not silence. I think that is an important part of the discussion and narrative.

A 45 hurts my ears more than anything else I've been around. I can get off three rounds, and then I don't want to shoot it anymore.

You can make a 22 quieter with shite everyone has laying around the house than with any can I've seen. Quieter than a pellet gun. Takes about 10 minutes
