When I was a kid I made fun of one and my dad reached across the car, slapped me in the mouth, and chewed me the hell out.
I swear that is a lesson that changed my views on any hardworking individual, no matter what the job.

When I was a kid, during summer the garbage truck would pass and I'd go grab 3 grape drinks for the garbage men. I was racist and didn't even know it.

Walked out yesterday morning and noticed that the garbage truck did not move for a while. Went to pick up my garbage can and I noticed that one of the workers from the back of the truck was leaning against the side of the truck taking a leak. After he finished his business, got on the truck and the truck pulled away with a puddle in the middle of the road.

They drank the hell out of them too.

I'm pretty sure the idea to be nice to them first popped in my head when my uncle pointed to a guy on the back of one of the trucks by his house and said "that's my cousin". I obviously assumed that I was legitimately related to that black guy.

Didn't realize what he meant for a few more years.

I meant everyone deserves praise for their hard work.

Last thing you want is a bunch of disgruntled garbagemen quitting on you.

It's a rough job the hoppers start 4 to 4:30 am.
Professional hoppers (guy dumps cans) hides out at certain times.
After Xmas, after hurricanes, and Mardi Gras.

When I was in the business I had some good hoppers.
They do ok as far as salary and I got on my drivers or fired them if they messed with hoppers. A good hopper runs route not driver.
I use to give bonuses for being done early and showing up 5 days in a row.
During warm months a professional hopper knows when to hide and I knocked on doors at 3 am to get these guys.

Now it's dangerous I avg one death a year and a lot of injuries.
Mostly cars getting to close to trucks or running into them.

They can do quite well if they buy up their Waste Management stock options

That's why when I know I have a huge pile of trash (say after a storm), I always wake up early that morning and bring out a few beers (they always ask for it), gatorade, and a few bags of chips for them. Its like any job, if you feel appreciated, you do a better job and you feel important. Everyone deserves praise.

We need more folks like you around.
