He dragged the state kicking and screaming into the twentieth century, despite the best efforts of the upperclass planters and bankers to keep the common man people of both races down.

Go ahead and enumerate his flaws, he had a lot of them. But recognize what he accomplished, and that he didn't come to power in a vacuum. People were drawn to him because he was a radical departure from the powers that be who had misruled the state for decades.

He set Louisiana into a state of dependency for three generations. He deserves no praise.

Many aspire to the same level of ambition as Long. Few had the grasp to match said ambition. Long was one. I'm not defending him. I'm admiring his ability to exert his will to accomplish what he did. It is impressive in terms of his ascension, triumph and consolidation of power.

One can admit to an admiration of accomplishment while neither condemning or condoning what was accomplished based on what your ideology happens to be.

Charisma and ambition when used for the detriment of your state aren't good traits.

Golfer, I'm not discussing or speaking of what you consider detrimental or glowingly contributory when it comes to the man's politics. Or what I would.

Again, I can admire without condemnation or waxing poetically. The journey he took as an individual is a testament to what humanity is capable of when they are free to exert themselves in a free society.

His ability to rise to power and bend it to his whim is impressive. It's an American success story. Whether you like what he did with his power or not, his ability to rise to it and marshal it the way he did is impressive.

Sorry you can't separate your personal politics from a discussion about something like this. Lots can't. My Dad, a few friends...no big deal.

Meh. He had a valuable skill set and used it poorly. So poorly, in fact, that we still suffer as a state from his ideals.

Except for the word "American" sounds like your talking about Hitler.

Yea I'm not sure why someone has to separate their abilities from their actions. Tons of people have incredible abilities but use them selfishly, or for the detriment of others, or simply squander them. Why does Long get a pass from this?

Never told you that you had to. Ever. Actually admitted a lot of family and friends of mine can't. I don't view it as a big deal. I do think its humorous but not in the sense that I'm belittling you or anyone for it.

I knew the sister of the alleged shooter. I'm guessing that Dr. Weiss did try to kill him but Long's bodyguards actually accidentally kilt the Senator (née Governor) in the attempt to stop the attack.
