I love getting cold calls. I like to make them think I'm interested in what they're selling and then pull the rug out from under their feet. Great entertainment!
I like how everyone in here thinks cold calling is done mostly on the phone. I hit up people in person a hell of a lot. Phone calls are usually in the early evenings for like a half hour or if it's raining.

again, some truth here. At some point you have to produce and prove your value regardless of your sex.
But I guarantee you a pretty woman will have easier success initially than a guy or unattractive woman. Ever see some of the dimes big pharma hires? there is a method to this madness.

You must be a pro at that red letter language. You got some tips for getting over awkwardness during a call?

Working in purchasing, I get cold calls by phone all the damn time. I usually ask them to send me something in writing and I'll contact them if interested or the need arises. Fortunately, walk in cold calls don't happen; we have the security folks in the lobby under orders to not give out our numbers and not to call us to see if we want to see the person. Take their info and give it to us, I can toss it in the trash just fine.

Only exception I'll make is if it's a hot chick.

you need to create a campaign that includes sending them relevant materials about how your service or product can help them solve a problem, save money, or increase value on something they care about.

The campaign should be customized to your customer…sending materials, working your network to see who you know that knows them, tell them about similar customer experiences in their industry…get involved in local industry groups and build relationships, call to follow up on materials you sent, events you attended, always add value , even if its informational…position yourself as someone who understands their business and industry…host your own informational events, bring in outside experts, create a brand for yourself and people will trust you…dialing for dollars like a bot doesn't work.

Cold Call sales people, door to door sales people, and wrecker drivers all have a corner of hell roped off for them.

I am assuming your "internship" is with Northwestern Mutual or something similar.

That place made me hate some friends in college. One friend of mine quit within a year and told me several friends/family stopped answering his calls altogether until he made it clear he wasn't shoving that crap down their throats anymore.

It's just a confidence thing, bro. Know what you're going to say beforehand, even write a script if you have to, make sure you're selling something good, make sure you believe in it and just have a good time.

Don't really do much of it at all these days...

Fact is, unless you're calling-up an old-school person, it's an annoyance for prospects.

Get emails addresses, write good, clear messages, then send away.

Follow-up in a normal time-frame, not 10 minutes later "Hey, did you get my email?", and do not sell in the email.

Make a connection, get a meeting, then sell.
