You know if it's real or a drill... mostly because they say "THIS IS A DRILL"

Well shite. When I was stationed in Germany they never told us when it was just a drill. We'd get an alert and have to grab our gear and get to the motor pool NOW.

Guess the army didn't give a shite if they were making us think we all might be about to die.

To be honest, that's EXACTLY what I'd tell the crew even if it was the real thing.

You wouldn't be able to pass off the real thing as a drill... the steps are different.

Plus in drills the missile doesn't actually leave the tube... and you can definitely tell when a missile leaves the tube. The entire sub shakes and bounces as the missile leaves and seawater pours into the tube for ballast. I've done practice launches with dummy missiles and you can't fake that feeling.

Well it's a little different when there are nuclear weapons involved and you're inside a tube 500 feet underwater.

This was 20 years before my time, but at one point, the Army had in Germany atomic weapons at the battalion level!

Atomic Annie

I think the Davey Crocket is what replaced her.

BTW, notice the columns of smoke off to the right of the fireball? I'd always wondered what those were. I finally found out (and I guess it's true ) that those are flare rockets shot up to help measure the blast.

Didn't know the steps are different. I thought it would be pretty much the same up until the launch command is sent to the weapons system. I figured that the crew would know the instant an ICBM left the sub, though.

Thankfully the Army brass finally thought better than giving nuclear missiles to a bunch of redlegs running around the backroads a Germany in jeeps. All the Davey Crockets were retired and recycled for more peaceful purposes....

Love the map.

I popped a 150kt air burst over the New Orleans CBD!
Good news is Tulane University goes away.
Bad news is my mother-in-law survives.

I'd ask them to move ground zero a little west, but I don't trust the mother frickers aim.

The effectiveness of nuclear weapons isn't in using them. If it comes down to having to actually use them you've already lost. If we ever start trading ICBMs with Russia, the whole world will lose.

What nuclear weapons are good for is as a deterrent to your enemies from attacking you. So with Boomers you want your enemy to know you've got them, and you're ready to use them. If the enemy doesn't know you've got them and can use them, then they're no good because you never actually want to have to use the damn things.

This is the plot line on Dr. Strangelove. The Russians had perfected their "Dooms Day Device" and made it operational, but hadn't publicized it yet because they were waiting to announce it at their May Day Parade.
