Russia has flexed its nuclear muscles once again by sending the world's largest submarine with an arsenal of 200 weapons on board including 20 nuclear missiles to the Baltic Sea.

The massive Typhoon-class sub called Dmitry Donskoy is to leave the White Sea and travel around Norway and Denmark into what Putin's officials are calling NATO's swimming pool.

Measuring 574-foot in length and equipped with a total of 200 deadly weapons, it is one of the most feared vessels of the Cold War era.

The Kremlin is scheduled to parade the submarine in St Petersburg, but is set to serve as a chilling reminder to the rest of the world about Russia's nuclear prowess.

That is one impressive sub.

I always liked sneaky underwater warfare.

Typhoon's are tracked and followed the moment they leave port. I guarantee you a USN fast attack will be hot on her tail as well as a consortium of German and Norweigian subs.

That typhoon will have been sunk 20 times without even knowing anyone was there

It's been so long since I saw the movie or read the book I can't remember what type of Soviet sub it dealt with.

I do remember the book was FAR better than the movie and the movie was pretty good. The one big knock against the movie is it ended only halfway through the book. In fact, it ended just as the story was about to get good.

I have that but haven't read that in a while, there was another pretty good one about us (cold war era,) bringing up a sunken commie sub, disguising it as oceanic "research," think it was a the Glomar Challenger's true purpose for being built

The Hunt for Red October hooked me as a Tom Clancy fan.

20 years later, I still read each of the Jack Ryan books when they come out.

My favorite Clancy book is Red Storm Rising which details what a war between the USA/USSR would have looked like in the 80's.
