Maybe in the future, but for now there are still IMGs getting spots in the most competitive specialties. I agree that it's getting tougher and tougher, but if you ace your boards, and do some electives at the hospital of your choice, it's still possible.

Caribbean schools are increasingly becoming a worse idea. There are new US MD schools popping up and virtually every US MD school has increased class sizes (the same is true to an even greater extent for DO schools). This means it will be harder and harder for Caribbean grads to secure residency spots, even primary care spots. A Caribbean grad will have virtually zero chance of matching any specialty that's competitive for US MDs.

To add, I believe 2015 was the first year that there are more US graduates than residency spots available.

My personal residency program has never even interviewed a Caribbean grad (or a DO), and there are many other programs that can say the same. 5-10 years ago the Caribbean was okay, but things are changing.

Disadvantages: looked down on by doctors and residency programs (much harder to find a residency after than US schools); costs a fortune, it is significantly more expensive than regular med schools (pretty sure it is almost $100k a year tuition, while the average is $50k, and LSU is a mere $22k); out of country most of the year; not sure how rigorous the program is, and not sure how reliable it is to keep its accreditation (this is a challenge for most of the out of country med schools)

Holy crap. 100k, I had no idea it is that expensive.

It's not. Well, at least in my case it wasn't. I want to say tuition was about $12k per semester and you pay for 11 semesters.

But there are a lot of other costs involved, such as moving around a lot during rotations and the costs associated with that.

I'm doubt there are any schools with $100k tuition. That's said, you'll leave most of these schools with $250k+.

Professional school tuition is out of control. Check out how much USC's dental school costs: LINK

Veterinary may be the biggest offender of them all. People that have to go to Ross college of vet med graduate with $250K in debt and might make 65-75k for at least the first 10 years of their career. US schools have all upped their class sizes. :It's a trap!:

Ross kids have a different curriculum for vet school too.
Their clinicals are shorter during their last year and a half.

Vet school is a very different animal though. There are so few schools compared to med school.

And even with Ross you still get the same DVM behind your name as everyone else. Expensive as shite though.

Yeah but being a dentist is the best gig out there. Hours are good. Pay is exceptional and there are a ton of procedures that are "cash" paying.

Ross also has a Vet school in St Kitts.

It's the same there, too. If you have everything lined up, but can't get into US med schools because you can't make the cut, you will get in at Ross.

However, Ross doesn't have the facilities for the clinical blocks, so everyone there has to find a US vet school to finish their last 18 months.

Yup and the actual advantage of Ross is you get to pick where you take clinicals unlike any other school.

It's not shorter so idk what brnet was saying.

FYI. Dominica and Dominican Republic are not the same place

This. Ross is in Dominca. Not in the Dominican Republic, which is on the Island of Hispanola.

Ross is now owned by Devry I believe.

Attending a Caribbean school definitely makes getting a residency more of an uphill climb. Most Caribbean grads end up doing something less competitive in a somewhat less desireble location (probably not going to match into a real prestigious institution or a real cool city).

Caribbean graduates very rarely match into competitive specialties like ortho, ENT, Urology. I am sure it has happened but I have never personally meet one.

My friend went there. It's a good school and he had a blast. He works in Internal Medicine at Ochsner in NOLA now.

The whole medschool/doctor thing sounds pretty easy, actually. I took a three year break from the OT, and come back to find that douchebag Scruffy is still posting 24/7.

But anyways he is trying to tell my other friend, who is smart, to apply for med school at Ross. And I'm saying why would you want to go to a foreign med school especially if you are smart enough to get accepted into a US med school. Can anybody name some advantages?

There are no advantages. ZERO. Many spend tons of money to go and can't pass licensing exams or get a residency. It should be illegal. The shittiest, shadiest doctors I know are all grads of these type schools. If you can't get into an American med school, there's a reason.

I think you don't understand the need for doctors in the US. Foreign trained or not, they will find employment.

2.9gpa, an application would go right in the trash for PT, PA, NP, a lot of nursing schools, and even dental hygiene.

Funny that acceptance into med school in the Caribbeans is still possible.

I have a few friends of the family that went the Ross route(about 10yrs ago) and they're practicing MD's now.
