So I'm looking into getting a road bike mainly for exercise. I'll be riding throughout the large residential area I live in and also head to the MS river levee to ride the paved paths for longer distances. Any of the OT have suggestions for a beginner road bicycle? Not looking for anything too expensive as I want to be sure I'll be in it for the long haul. But anything from $200-500ish would work. I did find a few links online with some recommendations. Anyone use any of these?

Try a sidewalk bicycle instead. It would be greatly appreciated

For that budget, definitely buy used.

It's been a while since I've bought mine, but Trek may have a price point bike towards the $500 range.... Not sure though. There are some bikes out there that can be had for that price. Maybe call the local places and see if they have used ones or craigslist. You need to take into consideration having/needing to purchase clip in petals and shoes. Much better riding experience. Also, a helmet and padded tights. Those seats hurt if you spend some time on them.

I ride a specialized with shimano 105 components... I've been having mine for about 5 years. No troubles other than the occasional maintenance and flat tire.

Yep. Five hundred is still going to be tough for anything decent.

I'd go to Dicks. I hear the have good cheap bikes.

Bikes are too expensive three days. It's ridiculous

How old are you? Road bikes are awesome b.c you can go far but if you aren't an experienced biker start with some sort of hybrid where you can sit more upright. Those road bikes are rough on your back.

Plus really expensive.

Definitely buy used.

You won't get anything decent or reliable there for under $500.

Beginner bikes start at $1000. Anything less is not worth riding.

did I do that right?

Are you set on a road bike? Sounds like this is more recreational. Consider a hybrid.

The Jamis Coda offers a solid bike and smooth ride for a decent price.

The Allegro line is another option. Lighter frame offers more speed but a more rigid ride.

Try a tricycle or a big wheel first.

Look at the components, price and for comfortable fit. All the major manufactures frames are made in the same couple of factories in Taiwan.

Definitely consider something more comfortable than a straight up road bike with racing geometry.
