in the obituary on CarTalk.com, his brother Ray said:

quote:

I guess he wasn't kidding, he really couldn't remember last week's puzzler.

I think that sums up their sense of humor and relationship pretty well.

My mother has Alzheimer's, as did her mother, and it's awful.

I would never have guessed this, from the article
quote:

They liked to act like they were just a couple of regular guys who happened to be mechanics, but both of them graduated from MIT.

Damn, really hate to hear that.

I still listen to their Saturday morning reruns. They ended the show in 2012 and it had become obvious that Ray was doing most of the show while Tom was still making funny comments but in a reduced role.

Very funny guys. And I learned a fair bit about cars. We listened to one of their shows on a road trip in which we started losing power steering fluid. They were right - rack and pinion leak.

RIP Tom.

Loved that program. Great for car trips on Saturday mornings and Sunday later morning/afternoon.

Condolences to the families.

Was nice to hear a couple of guys who were so passionate about a topic. Wish I would've tuned in more over the years.

I liked it when a guy called in, car had 130,000 or more miles on it, and he'd never changed the oil. He asked them if he should. They had a lot of fun with them.

Only question I have is will the law firm of Dewey, Cheatum, and Howe handle the estate.

You have my prayers, brother.

Very sad. When I talk to people about their cars I try to be serious and funny, like those guys. They were never condescending or fan boys and they never made fun of a caller's ride in a mean way.
Great show.

My favorites were the letter from 12-year-old Melissa (who must be in her 30s by now).

There was also this guy who called in saying he had a Great Dane with a gastrointestinal problem. Said Great Dane proceeded to barf up a "Great Dane sized amount" of partially digested dog food onto the dash board of his mid-sized car. The "chunks" immediately got all into the guy's ductwork via the dash vents. I almost ran off the road listening to this story. If Tom and Ray were driving, they would have driven off the road too, they were laughing so hard.

Anybody remember the caller who got the used 700 series Beamer and read the calisthenics routine for long drives that comes with the owner's manual?

To me the greatest segment of Car Talk was the Andy Letter.

"Do two people who know nothing about a given topic know more, or less, than one person who knows nothing about the topic?"

This may take a little while to load, it looks like there is heavy traffic on the site.

Andy letter

This applies to the OT lounge beautifully but substitute "dozens of" for "two".

makes me sad to hear this...I have never heard two more likeable radio personalities than these two guys...

and I agree with pretty much everyone else in that I would have never guessed that they had degrees from MIT....

Cosmo: He was Click.

Those guys were so funny. It was amazing when they could diagnose an obscure problem just based on a caller's description.

He will definitely be missed. Extremely contagious laugh.

I was listening to a report today and they interviewed Doug "the subway fugitive, not a slave to fashion, bongo-boy" Berman. I'd never heard that guy's voice before.

Such a good show and such entertaining dudes.

The few episodes they did for the cartoon were pretty funny.

One of the most entertaining shows in radio history. I could care less about cars, and I'd listen all the time.
