For those of you who took a break from college or decided to return and pursue an entirely different degree program, how was your transition from the 9-5, Monday-Friday work week grind to attending classes once again?

Was the drop in income a difficult aspect to handle?

Did you find that there was now a more noticeable maturity or cultural gap between you as an older student and students under the age of 21 (i.e. a certain amount of awkwardness in being the 'older guy/gal')?

18 year old girls will try to sleep with you. You MUST resist this temptation.

Do you plan on showing up to class in a suit every day?

I took a break between undergrad and grad school. One of the biggest changes I noticed was that students used both of the arm straps on their backpacks instead of using just one, allowing the bag to hang down in a cool fashion.

Only the geekiest homeschoolers with no social awareness used both arm straps but that became the norm. I blame 90210 for raising awareness.

I hope this feedback is helpful.

Be prepared to be bored. I went back for a Master's degree and felt like it was way easier than I remembered undergrad life. You've trained your brain to work, now your going to be an undergrad again. My advice is take as many hours as possible to keep you focused. Unless, you want to go back to party, then do whatever.

It fricking sucks. Think about going from relaxing when you get home to cramming three days straight for a test and doing homework that takes you a couple of hours once a week

I already have money, but if not, that would be a major problem

The maturity gap at LSU was ridiculous (I was 29 and they were 18). I could barely have a conversation with people in my group because they didn't understand how anything other than schoolwork works. UNO is much better because the average age is probably 7 years higher in each grade level

I may give millennials their fair amount of grief- but the one arm backpack was one thing I'm glad they fixed. I noticed the same thing (graduated HS in 1996 and started undergrad in 2003).

As long as you're not the old guy that asks a bunch of idiotic questions at the end of class when everyone's trying to leave, you should be fine.

The goal is to be as efficient as possible. I have 75 hours of coursework to complete and I am hoping to knock everything out in two spring semesters, two fall semesters, and one summer semester.

I didn't really party my first time around in college so the temptation might be there. Then again, most of that shite has always annoyed me more than anything.

I went back in my early 30s. The drop in income was difficult at first but eventually you get used to it. The good news is that it was much easier than I remembered. You will find yourself at the top in your classes. I also had to laugh whenever I heard someone talking about how difficult it was to take 15 hours without even having a part time job.

After several years in the real world I'm returning to grad school at 30. Enrolled in some senior level courses this semester. It really isn't that bad.

I think it helps if you treat school like a job by using time between classes to study or work on assignments.

Returned for another bachelors degree at 27 years old. I felt like the old guy in the club. I didn't have issues with making classes, but was surprised how much of a frick off I still was...lol.

It was fun but definitely had a much different feel to it. And, stay away from the younger college bars. You will be the old guy in the club.

ETA: I met my wife then (she was 18).....so, it was a huge win

Graduated high school in '96, started undergrad as a 25 year old in '03.

No awkwardness being the old guy, just don't be awkward and don't judge/look down on your classmates for being younger. The maturity gap is there (especially between you and 18 year old males), with the 18 year old girls it's more of a naivety gap than a maturity gap - and they'll appreciate your 'maturity'.

I took a 4 year break between undergrad and grad. I had saved some money and worked a couple of part time jobs while I was in school, plus left a crappy job working lots of hours to go back so any negatives due to loss of income were offset by getting to go to he gym twice a day, actually being able to attend football/basketball/baseball games whenever I wanted, and the occasional throw down at the watering hole of my choice.
