i know it`s becoming increasingly popular to retire in Belize, Costa Rico, etc. because retirement income goes much further there, anyone know anybody who has ever done that or thinking of doing that themselves?

Not my idea of a good thing.
I'd hate to be around so much poverty.

I know one couple that moved to belize after retirement. it's very primitive for them. not sure if that's a choice or if that's just the way belize is. I've never been of course.

I was going to retire to Utila Island, off the coast of Honduras. I stayed there several times and liked it. I bought some property with the idea of having a small house built. A few years later, I broke my back on a dive trip and found out how difficult it was to get to good medical facilities from such a remote location. I'm more accepting of the fact that as I have gotten older, I must consider health issues in my living situation.

My main issue with retiring to some of these places. Obviously, being stuck in the middle of nowhere when you have a heart attack isn't going to work out for you.

I guess I'd rather stay here and take big long trips so I don't get stuck in any one place.

Its why I'll never buy a second vacation house. I don't want to feel committed.

I honestly think that people who do this don't have a lick of sense.

Just my opinion...

My dad tried it for a little while in Ecuador, but came back after about 5 months. He said the money went very far, but it just got boring.

Past tense. It's a feeding ground for Americans looking to exit the country now.

I wouldn't mind traveling for several years in Central America but I can't see buying a home and becoming a EXPAT. I would like to rent a furnished home for 6 months in several different countries for a couple of years.

I think it would have been better of he'd actually taken the time to learn Spanish and really try to immerse in the city/culture. I think he just needed a few months to detach and get some quiet relaxation, which is what he did.

I have a buddy who moved to Costa Rica a couple of years ago. 32. Quit his plant job. Works a small easy going job in a surf town. Works, surfs, and lives his life. Loves every bit of it. Went and stayed with him for a couple of weeks last year. Very easy to see how he does it. If I hadn't been in a long term relationship, I was seriously considering joining him

Belize isn't like a third world country it is a third world country. Same with some other countries in Central America. The pacific coast seems to be better off than the Caribbean side or inland.

Personally I wouldn't retire there although I do want to get a place on an island and spend several months a year there. I just need to figure out which island.

Due to the language being English, many think it´s some type of diamond-in-the-rough oasis paradise surrounded by a sea of shitholes.
