Replacing granite counter tops...who is best?

I am wanting to replace my granite counter tops with a new color. Where should I get some quotes. I will call the big name stores like Homedepot and Lowes but I'm sure there are better places out there. Also, I see the granite is listed as price per SF. Is that before or after having it cut. I wasn't sure if they make you buy a big section of granite then cut it down. I don't have a lot of counter top space but have a few smaller areas. Also, is there anything I can with the old granite? Like sell it? I know it's cut specifically just didn't know if there was a market for used granite.

I use Assured Flooring on a lot of projects. I only use them for granite.

I would imagine they measure then charge by total square feet before cutting. Makes sense for a profit margin for the company.

If you have a piece 8'x2'-4" I'll buy, color doesn't matter.

If you want the best, I would recommend Michael Paul on Airline. When I worked for Tuscan Stone, a granite wholesale yard, we heard from many people and the owner vouched the Michael Paul was probably one, if not the best in Baton Rouge. Although like a previous poster mentioned Assured Flooring is a top notch operation as well and may be a shade cheaper than Michael Paul. The guys I remember from there really had it together and had nice equipment.
Probably couldn't go wrong with either. Typically if you go through the fabricator they will give you a set list of what to choose from or may allow you to go to a yard like Tuscan Stone to pick your slabs.
A typical slab is around 5-6 ft x 10-12 foot x 2-3 cm thick.
You'll have contractor grades which are very common granites and very uniform.
You'll have some mid-level granites, little more form/flow to the rock with some different colors.
Then exotics, these are pretty expensive, have a lot of form/flow and colors. These are pretty exclusive. You may like it a lot, but if you sell the next people may not. Some are really awesome looking from a geological perspective.
If you go to a fabricator they normally will make you pay just for what they cut out of the slabs. They will keep any remnants that are left to sell for small tables and such.

I'm not sure if I have a piece quite 8' in length. I think it will be closer to 5-6'. I'll measure when i get home and let you know.

Can I purchase the sections i need, then have someone else install them? Or is this frowned upon?

Old granite will be tough to remove without damaging. I wouldn't count on selling it. It's also heavy as shot so storage and moving will be a PITA.
Price per square foot installed is how they sell it. Only pay for what you use. Don't deal with anyone that tries to charge otherwise.
Measure exactly what you got, then multiply by price per square foot they quote you (likely between $35-75/sqft...$50/ft will get you something plenty nice).

I don't know any that just cut. When you go straight to a fabricator you're paying for cut, finishing, installation.
If you know someone who can cut and you want to install then, you can go that route and just find a way to pick up the slab yourself or have your cutter pick it up.
Again, I don't know any and doubt there are any that just do cutting. The install is the easy part and where they make their money.

Lots of places advertise a low square foot price to get you in then upcharge for everything. I often see places advertising $30 a square foot installed. Do you thing if someone has a small kitchen with 30 feet of counter space they are going to get granite installed for 900 bucks?

They might charge for cutouts, but yes, it is price per foot installed.
Also, this assumes no backsplash, which is obviously going to be more expensive because it's more material.
I had my bathroom done and it was same price per foot as kitchen, although cutouts are fixed costs (will be $150-300 regardless if kitchen or bath).
That low price of $30/ft is more of an indication of shitty/ugly material than any sort of bait and switch. However, the "up charges" like sink cutouts or finished edges will be the same either way, so the higher priced will have less of a "shock" on the final quote.

So you thinks you can get a small kitchen done for around a thousand?
Posted on 2/6/17 at 12:59 pm to mouton
if you went with the absolute cheapest stuff, and had no backsplash (just do cheap tile) and already have a sink, then yeah I guess it would be about that much. I wouldn't recommend it. But if what you are asking is if you can actually get them to install at $30/ft, when that is what they are advertising, the answer is yes. I'm not telling you you are going to like it.
30sqft is a really small kitchen too

I am in the granite business. Most places that advertise low prices like that have an extra charge to come out and template, charge by the linear foot for your edge, sink cutouts etc. Also your cheap colors are some of the most popular. Most of the gold and cream colors you see alot are very inexpensive. Cheap granite is not less durable are of lesser quality it is just more common in nature.

Four inches thick? Are you in the headstone fabrication business?
