Does anyone else do this? I usually rent a car when I go on long trips to keep the mileage and wear and tear off my car. When I go home for thanksgiving I'll rent a car from Wednesday-Monday for $90.

Should be on the Money Talk Board but yes to your question. Plus, if you can find a rental car that is the model of a candidate you might have for a future car purchase it's an extended test ride.

It's been a while but I put 1,800 miles on a rental Shitbox in less than seven days and paid about $75.00 for the weekly rental for it.

Doing this for our Christmas trip to New Mexico. I'd rather put the miles on a rental than ours...

more than 4 hours then rental is a good option IMO as long as it doesn't take up a ton of time to drive there, find a parking spot, deal with the people at the counter etc.

It works for me because I drive a truck, so renting a car has saved me both depreciation and gas mileage. Plus it's nice to drive a new rental car that you don't really care about.

I've done it just to ride in a different car. Kinda like "Car Strange".

I rent from enterprise about 5-6 times a year and they usually upgrade me to a bigger car if you sign up for their rewards program you get a free day rental for every 5-6 times you rent

No, I bought a car that I enjoy driving and taking on long trips. I would be miserable in a rental shitbox.

Not as miserable as you think. They have some nice cars to choose from. Enterprise lets me choose the car I want

Had a buddy get married about 900 miles away... went in and rented a car (all they had was a hybrid) since my truck is a guzzler. Payed $29.99 for a wknd rental, and then another $60 in gas and put 1800 miles on. Made it from BR to Houston on a 1/4 of a tank. Id highly recommend it.

I'm doing this for Christmas. You can get some cars/vans for a week for pretty cheap.

Not worth it to me.

I've got my vehicle set up the way I want it. It is far more comfortable on a long trip than most rentals.

And I do it because my car has 115,000 miles on it. I like the piece of mind when traveling long distances of not being stranded
