Don't really get all the hating going on in here. All he did was make an observation- one that I think a lot of gym-goers make. There are a lot of fat guys who do nothing but lift, aren't even strong relative to their BW, but think they are badasses for being able to deadlift 500 pounds at 260.

FWIW- I don't get the appeal of it either and have always wondered why they do it?

These power lifters that are being referenced. If they're 260, guarantee they are not as unhealthy and fat as you're making them out to be.

Also, everyone has different goals. Yes many men work out just to look good. But also many men work out simply because they love it. They love the gym atmosphere. They are addicted to that post workout soreness.

Also, can you lift 500?

My favorite as well. Particularly when they are wearing a weightbelt while doing bench and bouncing the bar. It's surreal.

We're talking regular dudes at the gym, not competing. Fat guys who come in, lift heavy, and go home and eat McDonald's. No cardio or anything else. I used 260 just as an example.

Right, I would just like to know why they enjoy it and why they do it.

260 lb. man here. I've been doing the Stronglifts 5x5 program for several weeks now. I typically do cardio after my workout, though it's not recommended for the program. I also run, bike, and swim on Tuesdays/Thursdays/Saturdays.

You can sit there judging other people while you sit in the squat rack curling 25s for an hour, but some people are actually building real usable strength. It's not just a bunch of Zyzzs that are allowed to use the gym. Here's a thought, maybe some of them are actually trying to get in shape. Just because they do lifting and no cardio, doesn't mean they aren't getting cardio elsewhere. If you've been going for a year now, and the same person is there without any progress, then maybe you can assume he's not doing cardio.

Who the frick goes to the gym to check out other dudes. First, you should be checking yourself out in the mirror, then you should be checking out the yoga pants women on the ellipticals.

You all keep talking about people not competing. Do you realize how much money there is to be made in powerlifting? It isn't much. Prize money for HUGE contests is around 10K. Lets just say that even Kazmaier wasn't making a living powerlifting.

I think a lot of guys just want to show off how much they can lift. A lot of guys like to compete with themselves and it is a hobby. I dont understand why someone would not want to also incorporate a healthy diet into their lifting as well but that does take a lot more dedication than just going to the gym and lifting heavy. To each his own.

Hell, some of us do it just because we like the challenge.

Here you are just being completely judgemental, you have no idea who the guy is or what he does. He is in the gym trying to lead a healthy lifestyle. Why continue to be so condescending.

I literally just explained why with this quote

Congrats
Why are you paying attention to other men at the gym again?
