The Ramp Meters that have been installed on the Ponchartrain Expressway will begin working today. I think it is absurd that the city wasted money on this. I have never had trouble merging on or off of the Ponchartrain Expressway.

I think this is similar to what they have on I-45 in Houston during rush hour.

The article explains it well. When the light is red you stop, when it's green you merge.

What's your question?

This is going to cause a cluster frick especially at Claiborne. They shortened the space you have to merge and put up a giant wall to block your vision and now they want you to come to complete stop and then gun it onto the interstate?

OMG! Not enough coffee yet this morning. I missed that small paragraph describing the red / green. I still think this is a waste of money and there is no way that the idiotic drivers around here will obey.

Most people in Houston don't. There's not a cop stationed there to enforce it, pulling people over would compound the stupid situation.

For what it's worth, the ones in Houston turn green for a vehicle to pass through, then turn red for about 3 seconds, then go to green for the next vehicle. It's basically an interstate turnstyle.

Someone's friend in the city's administration must own the company or at least work in sales at that company.

Louisiana drivers will have massive difficulty grasping this concept.

Tape a bunch of pictures of Southern war heroes on 'em and I'm sure there will be call to remove them.

When the light turnsgreen, only one car is supposed to proceed.

I'm not sure if they will be effective, but that stretch from the CCC to Claiborne Is a cluster when there is a lot of traffic, which is most of the time.

Just because you haven't had a problem doesn't mean that 99% of the drivers that use that ramp have no frickkng clue what they're doing. I'm glad the city spent money on these meters.

Should be interesting around Tchoupitoulas and Annunciation intersection with Calliope. Already a game of chicken with the drivers failing to yield at Annunciation to get to the up ramp.

They greatly increased the merge space getting in at Claiborne heading west. It's night and day, so much better than before.

Can't wait for the wrecks when some idiot thinks his "green light" means he has right of way to merge into the interstate...

You do realize this is just a red / green light on a timer with a pick up in the cement. Not like this is some million dollar piece of hardware. Your statement applies to plenty of things that our local governments buy but not this.

It's always funny to me when stuff like this happens in good ole La. Never mind that they have been using stuff like this all over the country for at least 5 years and it has shown to work. Our drivers somehow think they are smarter and know better about what works and doesn't.
