Raffle House controversy in St. Tammany.

Anyone following this on social media? Every year they raffle off a new house in St. Tammany and the money goes to charities. The house this year was in Mandeville and was valued at $422K. I think they limited the entries to 7,500. They held the drawing today, and apparently the winner was the father of the VP of the organization. The drawing is shown on video and appears legit, but obviously this will stop a lot of people from continuing to participate in this raffle in coming years. Most people who participate tend to do it every year. To me, it''s just common sense that immediate family should not be allowed to participate to prevent the mere appearance of impropriety.

I think the Feds need to audit St. Tammany.

Ironically, the house was built by Integrity Builders.

Assuming all proceeds went to chairty, who cares?. It's the north shore everyone who lives there is rich, right?

That seems to be the attitude of about 10% of those responding on their site. Of course, when I buy a ticket each year I know for all practical purposes it's a charitable donation. But come on, even for most raffles - especially of this size - family is excluded. Not to do so is just bad business, and I'm sure it will hurt them in the long run.

Well that isn't suspicious at all....

What happened the other years? Agree that the father shouldn't have entered, but the money usually goes to charity. Honestly it's all a giant sham.
The guy that built my house does a St Jude home every few years. Just so happens that the year after I move in, it's the one across the street from me. Think the value of the home was $350k, they capped raffles at 4000 (at $100 per ticket). All or most of the building supplies are donated, as well as appliances and stuff. So, the only thing the builder needs to foot is the cost of labor. Turns out the guy that won it was homeless; no idea how he bought the ticket. This got me digging into it.
In order for the winner to take possession of the house, he has to pay taxes, which is about 50%. Of course most people don't have this type of cash laying around, so the builder usually buys the house back, at a reduced rate. im not sure how they work it out since the winner doesn't own the house and therefore can't legally sell it. But this is what happened to this winner. The builder then turns around and sells at the normal market value.
So, st Jude gets $400k, the winner makes some cash (roughly $275k selling the house minus $175k in taxes), and the builder builds a house cheap and is able to turn around and sell it for a much larger profit.

I know someone who won the raffle through work and the scenario you described is exactly what went down

I figured people just got a mortgage for the taxes and moved in. Didn't realize it's a flip for the builder. Hmmm

Can't the taxes and insurance just be factored in? A free paid for 450k house in mandeville still gunna cost you 1300 a month or more. Not bad but not free

How do you figure the taxes on the house?

sounds like the next big issue for BR's favorite investigative journalist to look into.
