When mentioning the poorer performing students that were admitted ahead of this girl they mention grades and test scores. However, when trying to claim there were better performing minorities that were also not admitted, salon only mentions grades.

I volunteered at a local inner city high school to talk to kids about college. I met the salutatorian. I'll try to say this in the most gracious was possible and likely fail miserably. She did not come across as the caliber of person I would expect to be salutatorian of a high school. But because she was, she was going to A&M.

Based on your post, I would say that this is a fair assessment of you as well.

when i was in high school on nerd bowl we'd go to various high schools, including inner city high schools

the schools would always have big boards at the entrance celebrating the top ACT scores of the senior classes, and all were in the low 20s, which is what i scored as a 7th grader. that put things in perspective

those kids were all the 4.0 students who would have gained admissions to LSU over some very smart friends of mind who got 30s on the ACT and took the same gifted-track prep curriculum at my high school that produced 10+ 30+ ACT scores (out of a group of about 50)

THAT puts things into perspective

In other words some of the UT claims, parroted by the OP, appear dubious at best. In fact on the face of it, they appear to be an outright lie.

Yeah, I am sure they got one over the courts, including the Supreme Court. We will see what they say this time.

well the story does contain this paragraph

quote:

Fisher’s case only makes sense if you assume that people of color are inherently less worthy than white people. How else do you justify an argument that assumes that every white person should have been given a shot before minority students do?

which basically erodes the intellectual honesty of the entire piece in one major display of emotional-irrationality

oh we have another absurd strawman

quote:

“Rigorous judicial review,” Blum’s new petition argues, “would have revealed that UT’s ‘qualitative’ diversity interest is in fact illegitimate. It depends on the assumption that, as a group, minorities admitted through the Top Ten Percent Law are inherently limited in their ability to contribute to the university’s vision of a diverse student body, merely because many come from majority-minority communities.”

Translated from legalese to English: It’s supposedly racist to let students of color with middling grades into UT Austin, because you’re assuming they can’t do better.

saying that the assumption that majority-minority students are inherently limited and require skewed admissions (like the top 10% rule) to get into UT does NOT mean that anyone is assuming the students "can't do better" or that they have "middling grades" (as they have to be in the top 10%).

you can only argue a position is absurd and display that absurdity if you use logic. the author created the classic strawman argument

...again

The schools I used to go to in NOLA, pre-Katrina, were lower than this. I saw consistent "top scores" in the 13-17 range.

I always had trouble not laughing when the valedictorian with a 4.0, a 13 on the ACT, who could barely speak proper English would not ask, but DEMAND to know what scholarship I was going to offer them.

Blum’s argument says more about his and Fisher’s racial prejudices than it does about the school. It’s they who assume that non-whites students must have been given a leg up because they couldn’t hack it on their own. But when it comes to Fisher, they employ a different assumption, believing, against all evidence to the contrary, that she must be good enough to deserve a spot.

a 3rd strawman

Tang, why is the author of this piece so reliant solely on grades, when he ignorantly ignores that we have much more objective data to use to compare students? why doesn't the author delve into ACT/SAT scores instead of grades?

because let me just say that this mythical method of judgment that the author skips around is almost assuredly standardized scoring. it sounds racist to act like the plaintiff is just assuming these things, but when you introduce that variable, it explains why she believes her side to be true as well as the gap presented. that gap shows that the "bad" students had to have a "leg up" to get in and why she "deserved" to get in.

Oh no, Mr. SJW. Your article is absolutely fantastic.

I love shite like this.

As usual, it is filled with half-truths in order to push an agenda. It is much more fun to take the time to dissect the typical SJW methodology for everyone to see and then provide real-world examples of what happens in these situations.

I realize you feel great about this situation, especially considering the fact that an ugly white girl "got hers". (I happen to agree with you here). My point is, the ugly white girl should be the least of your concerns. But you are too bought into the Prog mentality to see otherwise.

Part of the reason why it is so easy for folks like me and SFP to dismantle a thread like this is because we were once you. I participated in this crap with the same mindset, until one day I woke up and realized WTF was going on. You are being used and still aren't smart enough to realize it.....

the biggest tell with this case is how people describe scalia's comments

anyone who tries to spin his comments into racism is displaying ignorance or forcing a dishonest narrative on purpose

Salon must truly believe that standardized tests do not offer equal opportunities to all, but a school in a poor district offers opportunities equal to a school in an affluent district. Either that, or it is somehow the mission of the University of Texas to redress the unequal opportunities between students from poor and affluent districts.

So how do you know I am really concerns me? It certainly won't ever effect me or my family. And if I was so concerned, how do you know it's not the least of my concerns? Because you don't your entire premise and "dismantling" is hogwash.

It goes much deeper than that.

This is just one state with one parameter.

I sat in on these committees. I knew others from schools across the country and we would share stories. The things I saw and heard. It was just.......

Yeah, enough. I'm going to enjoy the comments from here on out.
