I got mine after being in the same field for 12 years. I got to a point that I was topped out in the position/company I was at and needed something to set me apart from the others. Got a job last year at around a 40% increase in salary over where I was. For me it was about showing commitment in what I was doing and a want to better my career, it seems to have worked.

He lied to you.
I work for Shell and in no way shape or form did he get a 25% increase in salary.
The only way this is possible is if he got a 25% increase from his previous salary by coming to work for Shell.

I worked at Shell, not for Shell for years in an IT capacity - Shell (and many companies) generally contract IT employees. This is the same if you're a PM, you will be 3 of 4 times contracted to be a PM.
I will say the PMP is probably worth it in regards to initial salary you will command. Some employers see PMP and salivate. The issue is I think those times are closing. The market is saturated with incompetent PMs that rely on their PMP cert to get jobs. They end up working crazy hours just to try to maintain their projects. And again, in my experience, they are clueless.
A good PM doesn't necessarily have or not have a PMP. But I've personally been in many situations in which a PMP has no idea what his/her resources are responsible for. It's just Jane Doe, PMP.

Worth it? yes? The cert here is 500.00 pass or fail. FYI the application process is legit. You must apply and meet certain requirements before your allowed to take the certification.
