Related question: can someone who is legally prescribed marijuana be fired for failing a drug test?

Yes. Remember this came up in California years ago... Assume it's still the same there.

Except for positions like truck drivers. There would have to be a test to determine if someone was high at the point of an accident. Not just if they smoked on Saturday night and got in a wreck on Monday morning.

The company would probably be in a position to disallow it at all times to be safe.

I would think so.

If you are leaglly prescribed pain pills but show up to work drooling, half asleep, and pilled out your mind, I'd be willing to bet you'd get fired.

ETA: you can legally fired for no reason. Employment at will.

Ironically when I had surgery I was perscribed lortabs. Showed up to work and asked if it's ok that I'm on pain pills.

They laughed and said no problem. Didn't even ask for a script.

Michigan had a Walmart case where a guy challenged that and the court said the criminal exemption doesn't help you in the job sphere. I just had a union guy try to argue he shouldn't be tested when a company found out he had a med marijuana card, but the company was not having any of it.

Luckily, I work in an industry where just about everyone has prayed to Buddha at least a few times.

I'm sure some employers are more forgiving than others.

Why would it change?

That being said, most jobs aren't checking unless you hurt yourself anyways.

It really is sad how much marijuana is shunned by society while alcohol and prescription pills get a free pass.

I don't think anything would change. It's legal in CO but a lot of jobs around here (e.g., defense industry) don't allow it and do randoms.

Yea, go ahead and develop weapons used to murder people, but smoke that.

I agree. Now that I have a script I can be pilled out the next 6 months and not get fired.

Smoke a little weed and I'm done.

I know...it's crazy that they want the guys writing code for their satellites to not be high. They're funny that way.

Dude. When I was in EE all the smartest kids were the ones that would smoke every day. They'd get high and code shite you can't even dream of.

Most professionals, aside from maybe doctors, are not drug tested anyway.

Seriously I feel like the majority of the kids in my classes were pot smokers

I don't think I knew anybody at LSU (in the 70's) that wasn't.

A private company can still drug test and not hire you if they please, even if the drug is legal.

Well no shite. I meant a random drug test, not showing up to work stoned.

Not in a lot of states.

I would guess about 75% of people I know here smoke weed, at least occasionally.
