Private personal injury attorney vs. large firm

Can yall walk me through the pros/cons of this decision?
Background: Rear ended by another car. The other guy's insurance situation is unclear at this moment. The driver of the car I was in does have UM and UMBI. Some of the passengers in the car I was in want to get checked out by a doctor.

i'd go with a smaller firm. your really big "advertising" firms typically make their money on settling an insane amount of small claims. they work in volume and your situation may be complex due to the number of passengers

Is he just picking a smaller firm randomly or is he getting some sort of trustworthy referral from someone? If it's the former, his odds of getting good representation may be better by picking the bigger Morris Bart type outfit. All things being equal, though, I agree with you.

well i was hoping he'd respond to get there
if he lives in an area where i know lawyers i'll recommend somebody (and in case the ODC is watching: i have no pecuniary interest in the referral or this case and would refuse any if the referral was every somehow discovered by the attorney)

The small firm attorney is a personal friend of the car owner. I asked about the larger firm because I also have a friend who works for one. He is not the head attorney there though.

oh well if you have connections or referrals then that's tough to distinguish, but it's good that there is a higher level of trust than "Random"

No, it isn't.

We need to clarify what is meant by "large firm" in this context, I think.

They will be asking for 30%-40% of your total settlement including the amount you pay to doctor bills which is ridiculous IMO. For example:
Completely hypothetical and assumes no medical insurance involved...
Your medical expenses total $21,500
You settle your claim for $70,000
Your attorney gets (at 35%) $24,500
You only get 24,000 after you pay medical bills
So your attorney winds up getting more than you after you pay all your bills.
The amount that goes to pay your doctor bills shouldn't be part of what the attorney gets. The attorney should get 30% of what he/she can negotiate AFTER medical bills. Would be tough to find an attorney to do this, but trust me, it's possible and only fair in my opinion.
